The Champlain Bridge deck was first replaced in 1969 and the Bridge was extensively repaired, as an interim measure, in 1978.
In April 2000, the NCC and Fullercon Limited informed the public of the status of the reconstruction project for the Champlain Bridge and announced that the opening of the three lanes of the bridge could be advanced by six months to December 31, 2000.

The Champlain Bridge, opened to traffic on June 29, 1962, was named in honour of explorer Samuel de Champlain, who founded Quebec City in 1608.
The Bonaventure Expressway, which is part of the north approach to the bridge, was opened to traffic on April 21, 1967.
The Champlain Bridge links the municipalities of Brossard and Verdun, and is approximately six kilometres in length.

The J.A.C.P.A.T. study points out that there was a 14 percent increase in vehicle traffic on the Champlain Bridge from 1987 to 1992, from 10,250 vehicles to 11,700 in the morning peak hour.
A quick survey of the Champlain Bridge reveals that the majority of vehicles during the morning rush hour contain a single occupant.
Considering that it takes less than half an hour to bike from Aylmer across the Champlain Bridge and on to Tunney's Pasture, the bicycle is also a viable answer.

It was built in 1911-12 as a memorial to Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer who, in July 1609 with two of his men, was guided up Lake Champlain from the north by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans from the St. Lawrence River region, to help them battle their enemies, the Iroquois.
Thus Champlain was the first European to record seeing the lake and he named it for himself.

The issue of the Champlain Bridge is again up for debate with the NCC's decision to conduct an environmental impact study (EIS) on options for its reconstruction.

A recently-released study report proposed four alternative routes: new bridges at Kettle Island, Lemieux Island, or Britannia Bay/Deschenes Rapids, or widening or twinning the current Champlain Bridge.
In each case, the problem would not come from just the bridges themselves but from the new access routes that would have to be built to bring the traffic from the bridges to the Queensway.

The bridge was constructed to connect the eastern fortification on Mount Independence, and an existing road to Castleton, Vermont with Fort Ticonderoga on the west side of Lake Champlain.
