Blood Line '80 on Time Records broke through, albeit in a contained way since these Japanese pressings were very expensive and hard to locate outside the Orient; recorded in Hawaii, this album brought Ry Cooder as a guest musician as well as Makoto Kubota, Haruomi Hosono and an uncredited Sandii to boost the group's sound.
Items from his repertoire were covered by acts as diverse as Thailand's Caravan and Indonesia's Detty Kurnia, and the first Western release was The Music Power From Okinawa on GlobeStyle '91, a reissue of a live album made '77 at Kina's club the Mikado in Koza.
Champloose Renaissance on Toshiba '92 revisited old hits, some recorded live, including the inevitable 'Haisai Ojisan', 'Hana (A Flower In Every Heart)' and 'Tokyo Hymn'.

 Champloose - InformationBlast
Champloose is an Okinawan band which blended traditional okinawan music and a strong Western rock influence.
First major single was the classic "Haisai Ojisan" (Hey, old man), written while Kina was still in high school but not a hit until a few years later, in 1972.
Later, Champloose's version of the Okinawan folk song "Jin Jin" (Firefly) was a minor hit in British discos, and their ballad "Hana" (Flowers), with vocals by Kina's wife, became a weepy favourite in many Asian countries.

Fans here say his music transcends Okinawa while embodying what is best about its music: the passion of a people oppressed by war and social injustice; the light-heartedness of simple farming folk; and the richness of a multi-ethnic legacy.

Luaka Bop: Asia Classics 2: Peppermint Teahouse - The Best of Shoukichi Kina
It was around this time that various stories began to emerge — some true, some not quite — of his being a kind of nocturnal “King of Koza,” that he managed the folk music club Mikado, and that he made quite a lot of money as a dealer in a gambling casino.
It was from then that the distinctive “Champloose Sound” began to emerge — a unique combination of rock and Okinawan folk that was exactly right for those times, and these times, too.
Thanks to its nearly instant popularity — and to some adroit timing — the first Champloose concert outside Okinawa, in December 1977, was also a crowning success, with round after round of standing ovations from the sell-out crowd at Tokyo’s Nakano Sun Plaza.

One of Okinawa's most important musicians since he founded Champloose in 1968, Shokichi Kina is perhaps the island's most passionate spokesman, speaking out against the American bases which dominate the island.

 Shoukichi Kina: Okinawa New Wave
I first heard a fuzzy, 10th generation cassette of a live recording by Okinawa's Shoukichi Kina and Champloose back in 1980, from a radio listener who had lived in Japan in the late seventies.
No sanshiens, but plenty of local musical references, the Champloose singers, dark passages and witty musical interludes, and a nice version of "Hai Sai Ojisan" performed by Kina on acoustic guitar with just some gentle electronics from Yano, a sweet and gentle contrast to the more familiar rock versions of the song.
A very good recording that was probably Kina's most aggressive attempt to expand the roots of his music without some of the schmaltz-pop abuses of later recordings.
