 The Bronx issue
In the 1930s, when Deco was all the rage and the borough experienced a building boom, this 12-lane boulevard came to be known as "the Champs-Élysées of the Bronx," thanks to its urban vibe and jazzy designs.
The stores are close to Manhattan (just two stops into the Bronx on the 6 train), but that proximity is not reflected in their prices, making this the place to pick up a 1930s Art Deco coffee table or a 1912 secretary (of the wooden, not human, kind).
These 42 square miles of land were intended to be kept as parkland refuge—a string of green spaces connecting a sprinkling of villages among steep hills, jutting peninsulas and isolated islands.
