Aleatoric music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Aleatoric music (or aleatory) is music in which some element of the composition is left to chance or some primary element of a composed work's realization is left to the determination of its performer(s).
The term was intended by Boulez to distinguish his work from pieces composed through the application of chance operations by John Cage and Cage's aesthetic of indeterminate music or indeterminacy.
Among examples of aleatory music, Klavierstück XI by Karlheinz Stockhausen features a number of elements to be performed in changing sequences, certain orchestral works of Witold Lutosławski contain music where the orchestral ensemble is not precisely dictated, and in some works by Krzysztof Penderecki characteristic sequences are repeated quickly, producing a kind of oscillating sound.

When writing chance music, a composer leaves many aspects of the composition to chance but still has to make some subjective decisions such as: to determine the length of the piece or to specify (or not) the instrumentation.
Implied here is also the idea that one does not need a special training to produce music and that music is whatever we decide to call by that name and listen to as such.
Cage's music is an example of music in which the philosophy, the ideas behind the composition, become more important.

Nolan Chance was a fixture on the music scene in Chicago for years; a singer of considerable talent who, by virtue of bad timing and business situations beyond his control, never quite got the right break at the right time to achieve some of the recognition that he might have deserved.
Chance didn't record again until the end of the 1960s, when Eddie Thomas signed with the Curtom label.
The fit between Chance and Curtom should have been a natural, in view of the fact that the label later became home to Gene Chandler, the man he'd replaced in the Dukays, but the relationship with the label didn't last.

Introduction to 'The music of John Cage'
His adoption of chance techniques is almost always seen as a rejection: a jettisoning of everything traditionally musical.
The way out of this dilemma has traditionally been to ignore the music and dwell upon "the ideas behind it." For if Cage has left his music to chance, if he has thus extinguished his authority as a composer, then all that remains an idea--the idea of inviting randomness into his work.
The frameworks for Cage's chance systems were crafted with an ear towards what sorts of results they would produce, so that the questions he asked form the basis of his own distinctive musical style.

 Music of the Heart
The Music of the Heart is derived from electrocardiogram (ECG) data, actual digital recordings of the electrical signals of the human heart.
This 'heart music' created by museum-goers is different from the HeartSongs above which were 'interpreted' by a composer (i.e., chords and rhythm were added by the composer on top of the melody created from the data).
The musical pieces recorded here cannot resolve this question, but may challenge the imagination and delight the ear.
