She was born in 1624 and was the daughter of Bhai lal Chand Subulikka and Bishan Kaur, a pious couple of Kartarpur, in present-day Kapurthala district of the Punjab.
Lal Chand had migrated from his ancestral village, Lakhnaur, in Ambala district, to settle at Kartarpur where his daughter Gujari was married to (Guru) Tegh Bahadur on 4 February 1633.
Mata Gujar Kaur and her grandsons were arrested on 8 December 1705 and confined in Sirhind Fort in what is referred to in Sikh chronicles as Thanda Burj, the cold tower.

Dhian Singh's uncharitable refusal to admit Nau Nihal Singh's mother Chand Kaur to the palace to enable her to tend her wounded son is in itself an adequate evidence of his sinister motive.
Chand Kaur's claim was supported by the powerful Sandhanwalia Sardars, and also by, as she thought, Raja Dhian Singh, the Prime Minister, who was, however, only deceiving her, as he was actually working at that time on behalf of Prince Sher Singh.
Dhian Singh had promised Chand Kaur during his interview with her that she should reign, but his great object was to ensure her silence and gain time, until the arrival of Sher Singh to whom he had privately written to lose no time in coming to Lahore.

 Sardarni Sada Kaur
ardarni Sada Kaur was the daughter of Dasaundha Singh Gill, was married to Gurbaksh Singh, son of Jai Singh, leader of the Kanhaiya clan.
On his return from the cis-Sutlej campaign in 1807, Ranjit Singh was presented by Sada Kaur with twin sons, Sher Singh and Tara Singh, born to her daughter, Mahitab kaur.
Sada Kaur refused and threatened to seek the protection of the British in the cis-Sutlej territory and hand over to them the town of Vadhni, located to the south of Sutlej which Ranjit Singh had conquered and transferred to her in 1808.
