About 1.25 lakh shallow tube-wells of all the eight upazilas of the district have already been sealed as the waters of those contain arsenic beyond permissible limits which are very much harmful to human body, he added.

The Wainganga is the principal river in the district, and the only stream that does not dry up in the hot weather,its affluents within the district being the Bawanthari, Bagh, Kanhan and Chulban.

Yet another incident of five serial bomb blasts at courts in Chandpur, Laxmipur and Chittagong yesterday left two people killed and 38 others, including a district judge and a policeman, injured, stoking fears that have loomed over the country since the August 17 attacks.
Two bombers held from the Chandpur blast site and one from Laxmipur said JMB, which is blamed for the August 17 attacks across the country, assigned them to carry out the bombings.
Abul Hashem Bakaul, 55, a witness in a case, and Mujibul Huq, 70, died in Chandpur and Laxmipur.

Officials say that so many fish escaped in Chandpur that many were left to rot on dry land once flood waters started to recede.
The district has around 13,000 fish farms, most of which have lost stock because of heavy rain over the past few days, said Kaium Talukdar of the Chandpur fisheries department.

The research was carried out on 300 men and women in Hajiganj Upazila of Chandpur District, known as a highly arsenic contaminated area in the country.
The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) conducted a survey in the water of 3,975 tubewells out of 7,995 tubewells in the district and noted with concern that water of 1,685 tubewells was found arsenic contamination.
But sample collected from different parts of the district indicated that the high percentage of the arsenic contents like that of 0.51 mg to 0.56 mg in the tubewells water is extremely dangerous for public health.

In Chandpur, Hashem Bakul died on the spot and five others, mostly lawyers, were wounded when two powerful bombs exploded at District Judge's Court building at noon.
