Changan Auto, Ford's car-making partner in China, will invest $60 million to secure control of a smaller local rival, the company said on Wednesday as the fragmented industry consolidates.
Under terms of the deal, Changan Auto would control five of the joint venture's nine board seats, handing it effective control of the joint venture, which would be publicly listed, the official Securities Times said.
Changan posted a nearly 32 percent slide in third quarter earnings, though sales in the first nine months leapt 22 percent to 339,449 units.

Changan will spend 250 million yuan (US$31 million) on hybrid cars as part of its total investment of more than 5 billion yuan (US$620 million) to develop own-brand cars in the years to 2010.
Changan announced last month that it aims to lift overall sales from 630,000 vehicles in 2005 to 1.5 million units by the end of the decade, with more than half from its own nameplates.

Changan, China's top maker of minivans, also assembles compact cars with Japan's Suzuki Corp. It is now the country's fourth largest vehicle maker after Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. (SAIC), First Auto Works and and Dongfeng Motors.
Changan Auto, together with its rival Shanghai Automotive Co Ltd, owner of a fifth of General Motors' major Chinese car plant, said over the weekend that their net profit for the first half of 2005 could plunge over 50 percent.

Changan Auto is targeting overseas expansion after new models spurred a 44 percent increase in third-quarter sales, helping the company to rebound to a profit from a net loss a year earlier.

Jiangling Motors Corp now mainly produces Ford Transit vans, Isuzu light trucks and pickups, and the newspaper said that Isuzu Motors may not intend to expand its van-making operations.
The joint venture holds a 41.03 pct stake in Jiangling Motors Corp, and Ford 30 pct, granting Changan Automotive Group and Ford a combined 71 pct stake.
