Chang Hsüeh-ch'eng (1738-1801) was a Chinese scholar and historian.
Chang Hsüeh-ch'eng was a native of China's coastal province of Chekiang.
In this idea Chang was applying the thoughts of the great Ming philosopher Wang Yang-ming, who had advocated a "unity of thought and action." Relating his thoughts to the political conditions of his day, Chang firmly supported state control of scholarship and even endorsed the Emperor's literary inquisition of the late 18th century.

East of Yichang, the Chang enters the lake-studded middle basin of Hubei, Hunan, and Jiangxi provs., a rich agricultural and industrial region; Wuhan, at the confluence of the Han and Chang, is the principal city.
Leaving the Sichuan basin, the Chang receives the Wu River and flows through the spectacular Chang gorges that extend from Fengjieh to Yichang; there the river is a serious hazard and at times navigation is impossible.

Chang Hsüeh-ch'eng suggested an approach: "One must use women of the past such as T'ai-jen and T'ai-ssu to render the fullness of its hidden virtues." T'ai-jen was the mother, and T'ai-ssu the wife, of King Wen, founder of the ancient Chou state and the most illustrious of all kings.
Wu-ling was the heir to Chang Shu-sheng's branch.
Chang called these men "shameless hypocrites" and their protégées "women of activity," and he characterized their venture as a grand delusion, men deluding women and women deluding themselves.

In 1936 Gen. Chang Hsüeh-liang seized him at Xi&, to force him to terminate the civil war against the Communists in order to establish a united front against the encroaching Japanese.
Despite the resultant truce, Chiang’s release, and the 1937 outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, the agreement between Nationalists and Communists soon broke down.
Thereafter, under various titles and offices, he exercised virtually uninterrupted power as leader of the Nationalist government.

A common legend states that in the second year of the Hsüan-ho, in the Sung dynasty [i.q.
It is indeed to yeh-tzâ rather than to the ya pa'i that we must look not only for the origin of most Chinese paper cards, but for that of European playing cards as well; and the modest scholiast already quoted gives the clue when he explains yeh-tzâ by "Sung money".
Goodall have lately brought out in English dress under the name of "Khanhoo," the cards are brought together in combinations of three (suggested probably by the number of the numeral cards, 3X3X3), and hence, whatever the Redflower, Whiteflower, and Old Thousand may originally have been, their number was necessarily fixed at three.
