Changanassery Archbishop Powathil, who is also the chairman of the Inter-Church Education Council said that the reason for the church approaching the court on the Self-Financing Colleges Act is the conviction that minority rights are at stake.
Even while reserving his comments on Tuesday?s High Court Single Bench verdict on the self-financing colleges issue, maintaining that more time was needed to study the court order, Archbishop Powathil said that what the Church wanted by approaching the court was to point out a wrong committed by the government.

In 1956, Changanassery was raised to the status of an Archdiocese.
Established in 1950 by the bifurcation of the diocese of Changanassery, by Pope Pius XII with Mar Sebastian Vayalil as its first bishop, who was succeeded by the present bishop Mar Joseph Pallikaparambil.
The diocese was established on November 11, 1996 by Pope John Paul II, by the bifurcation of Changanassery Archdiocese and including the districts of Kanyakumari and the district of Senkottai in Thirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu.

 Mar Joseph Powathil
On 29 January 1972 he was nominated Auxiliary Bishop of Changanassery and was ordained bishop by Pope Paul VI on 13 February 1972 at Rome.
Following the footsteps of his predecessor, Bishop James Kalacherry, who challenged the unjust educational policies of the famous Sir C.P. Rama Swamy Iyyer, he was at the leadership to defend the educational rights of the minority communities and led the agitation for freedom.
His special care and concern for the margininalised, especially for the mentally challenged children is manifested in nineteen special schools for the mentally challenged in the Archdiocese itself and four schools for the physically handicapped.

The Changanassery in Kottayam district reported red rainwater on last Friday, while scarlet rain from isolated areas in Ernakulam, Alappuzha and Pathanamthitta districts left a few eyebrows raised.
The reddish rainwater was first reported in June from Changanassery although it was dismissed as an isolated incident.

When a ritual separation was effected for the Catholics in Kerala between the Orientals and Latins in 1887, all the Knanaya Catholics de facto were in the Apostolic Vicariate of Kottayam, and the Holy See ordered Bishop Charles Lavigne to appoint a separate Vicar General for the Knanaya Comm-unity.
When the Vicariates Apostolic were re-organized into Trichur, Ernakulam and Changanassery and three indigenous bishops were appointed for the Syro-Malabarians in 1896 the bishop appointed for the Vicariate of Changanassery was Mar Mathew Makil, the former Vicar General for the Knanaya Community.
On August 29, 1911 the Vicariate Apostolic of Kottayam was re-constituted exclusively for the Knanaya Community by the Apostolic letter “In Universi Christiani” of His Holiness Pope St Pius X. On December 21, 1923 the Vicariate Apostolic of Kottayam was raised to an Eparchy by Pope Pius XI.

 Sacred relic of St. Thomas transported to Kerala

Changanassery Archbishop Joseph Powathil and Niranam Pilgrim Centre Rector Fr.Philip Nelpuraparambil organized bringing the holy relic from Italy.
According to the Church officials in the Changanassery archdiocese, the holy relic was taken to the Forane churches in Kurumbanad, Nedumkunnam and Manimala on Monday and Tuesday, before it was installed at the Marthoma Pilgrim Centre in Niranam.
