Colors are fairly accurate, but the overall level of sharpness varies greatly from scene to scene.
While some close-up shots and well-lit scenes appear surprisingly clear and detailed, other scenes are soft and hazy, giving away the fact that this is a 20-year-old film.
The print used for the DVD transfer is very clean and free of anomalies, however compression artifacting is a constant problem.

Changeling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In European folklore and folk belief, a changeling is the offspring of a fairy, troll, elf or other legendary creature, left secretly in exchange for a human child.
It was believed that, if a human child was taken in spite of such measures, the parents could force the return of the child by treating the changeling cruelly, using methods such as whipping or even inserting it in a heated oven.
The human girl is disgusted by her future bridegroom, a troll prince, whereas the troll girl is bored by her life and by her dull human future groom.

While movie audiences are filling theaters and movie rentals houses to watch suspense films for the fun-filled about-face turn-around at the end, the method that the filmmakers are using to tickle the audience is based on a short-sighted formula that may not have legs if not done more carefully.
Everything she did throughout the film to discover the underlying mystery of the killer and her history all turned out to be moot and irrelevant.
This film is very similar to "The Ring" in many forms, but the suspense and ultimate surprise is far more engaging because the twist had everything to do with the main character's personal objectives.

He allows the audience to catch their breath, but rather than that technique preventing the film from being chilling constantly, it works in the opposite way, because it gives the viewer the chance to dwell and contemplate what they have just seen, magnifying the horror.
The film is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and anamorphic enhanced.
The sound used in the film is very important but doesn’t lose any of its effectiveness without a full 5.1 workout, because it was made under the constraints of mono sound recording.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: The Changeling
Shot over six days for only $25,000, the history of its cast and crew dates as far back as 12 years, a familiarity that manifests itself in the almost hallowed resonance between the performers, whose interaction is not unlike that of a traveling theatre company whose every performance is just as impassioned as the last.
Beatrice Joanna (Wendy Herlich) is the daughter of the wealthy Vermandero (James Prendergast), who, despite his daughter's affection for the good-natured Alsemero (Chris Brady), has arranged for her marriage to the powerful Alonzo (Craig Wichman), a man she cannot bring herself to sit over tea with, let alone love.
The Changeling's opening shot evokes a precious bird trapped within an invisible cage: Beatrice sits longingly at a sun-tinted window, while a young girl—a means of spiritual escape devised by her own imagination—frolics along the property outside her residing mansion.

Peter Medak's film has been a long favorite of horror fans, and it is a treat to evaluate the score as a separate entity after almost twenty years.
It is important to note how much this film relies on music, both in its storyline, and the fact there are numerous scenes that rely solely on music and sound effects for the desired result.
The music box also figures into the plot as a prop, and since the film's main protagonist is a child, the theme does comment perfectly on the film, and is not simply dropped in to add a scary element.

UIP Ltd. - The Changeling - Synopsis
The Changeling is a vortex of lust, corruption, murder, sex and death - based on the original story by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley.
Though The Changeling is in many ways a play of its time, particularly in its mood, it's concern with the process of human corruption, and its scenes of sensational horror, it has become increasingly popular with twentieth century audiences.
The Changeling powerfully presents the tragic spectacle of a woman unwittingly bringing about her own destruction, and, although she is not admirable, nor even very likable, the audience watches in horror.

More, the film's changeling child's dreams remind of the "School of Dead Children" arc from Neil Gaiman's late lamented "Sandman" comic, a connection made resonant by the fact that screenwriter Mark Bomback's next project is the cautiously-awaited adaptation of Garth Ennis' "Hellblazer" title (Constantine).
What results is a complete betrayal of absolutely everything eloquent about the film's pitch--not a twist so much as a cheat of the worst kind, one from an altogether different movie at that: the revelation that the Wizard of Oz is Godzilla.
Godsend is the kind of disappointment where you realize that not only does the film fail a fantastic concept, it's also made it just that much more difficult for someone with the ability to carry the concept through to a satisfactory end to ever realize it properly.
