Topic: Changes One (Mingus)

Charles Mingus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mingus blamed the Parker mythology for a derivative crop of pretenders to Parker's throne.
Mingus had already recorded about ten albums as a bandleader, but 1956 was a breakthrough year, with the release of Pithecanthropus Erectus, arguably his first major work as both a bandleader and composer.
By the mid-1970s, Mingus was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (popularly known as Lou Gehrig's disease), a wastage of the musculature.

Mingus was the heir apparent to Duke Ellington--a composer who superceded his contemporaries and created ideas so fresh and relevant that his body of work has been described in The New Yorker as "equal [to] anything written in western music in the twentieth century."
Mingus broke new ground with the constantly changing players demanding that his musicians be able to explore and develop their perceptions on the spot.
Mingus refused to compromise his musical integrity which led to many onstage explosions (though it has been argued that his temper grew also from his desire to vent, such that a perfect show could irke him by closing his outlets for frustration).

Mingus shaped these newbies into a cohesive improvisational machine that predated avant garde jazz by decades.
Mingus recorded and performed with many notable jazz musicians, including Miles Davis, Lionel Hampton, Dave Brubeck, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holliday, Jackie McLean, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Eric Dolphy, Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington.
Mingus performance and recording career ended in 1977 when he was diagnosed with Amyotropic lateral sclerosis.

Changes One by Charles Mingus CD
CHANGES ONE (and its companion disc CHANGES TWO, both recorded in a single session) features outstanding performances of Mingus's intense, expressive compositions and is considered, even by the bassist himself, to be among his finest work.
This group of intelligent, technically superior musicians, consisting of tenor sax, trumpet, piano and drums, had been playing together for two years at the time of recording and were at the peak of their collaborative powers.
The tracks are as diverse as they are engaging-- ranging from the mind-boggling complexity of "Sue's Changes (with shifts of tempo, theme and mood, showered over by Don Pullen's keyboard flurries) to the straightahead rock of "Devil Blues" (with a spirited, shouting blues vocal by saxophonist George Adams).

 Jelly review: Mingus Big Band
As good as Charles Mingus was as a bass player, which is to say one of the greatest, I am sure he will eventually be remembered more as a composer.
This is a shame, since Mingus is one of a handful of truly great jazz composers, extending the tradition of Ellington and Monk, and striding the full range of jazz from gospel and Dixieland to hard bop and free jazz.
The Mingus Big Band, run by Mingus's widow Sue, evolved from the large group put together by Gunther Schuller for the posthumous performance of Mingus's massive "Epitaph." The band plays weekly in New York with a revolving list of performers and arrangers.

 Changes One - Compare prices
Of Charles Mingus's late-period recordings, the best are this and its follow-up, Changes Two, both recorded in 1974.
Mingus hadn't led a band with an end-to-end cohesiveness and lasting power like this one since the 1964 group that recorded Revenge: The Legendary Paris Concerts.
The tunes on Changes One echo Mingus's political bent but do so in a way that seems to balance fury, ennui, and church-inflected shouts.

Duke Ellington - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the early 1960s, Ellington was between recording contracts, which allowed him to record with a variety of new artists.
In 1962, he participated in a session which produced the "Money Jungle" (United Artists) album with Charles Mingus and Max Roach, and recorded with John Coltrane for Impulse, who also recorded Ellington and his Orchestra with Coleman Hawkins.
Musicians who had previously worked with Ellington returned to the Orchestra as members: Lawrence Brown in 1960 and Cootie Williams two years later.

Mingus varied the song "What Is This Thing Called Love" many times; his "What Love" (13:34) on the 'Antibes' CD is a thoughtful, balletic composition.
Mingus drives the whole album, he is simultaneously everywhere AND at the center.

Mingus was a great admirer of Duke Ellington and played in the latter's band until a notorious onstage fight with Juan Tizol.
Mingus uses Hanna quite extensively on the album, and his contributions are enormous.
"Mingus Dynasty", Charles Mingus' followup to "Mingus Ah Um", is similar in form to its predecessor, but suffers the unfortunate fate of being the followup to a brilliant album, and as is usually the case, it falls short.

There are enough time changes and polyrhythmic interplay to keep a die-hard progressive fan interested while it is accessible enough for the casual listener to get into after only one or two tries.

Among the best of Mingus' later work, CHANGES TWO (and its companion disc CHANGES ONE, both recorded in a single session) is a compelling journey into the kaleidoscopic world of this genius bassist/composer.
Mingus began recording as a leader in the early '50s, and by the end of the decade he was at the peak of his powers as bandleader, arranger, and composer.
Mingus died of Lou Gehrig's Disease in 1978, but his mark on subsequent musical generations is indelible.

One of the things I love about Mingus, (and there are many things I love about Mingus!) is his compositions increased my appreciation of horns blowing wild and loose, seemingly disconnected from each other AND the rhythm section.
Blues is at the root of Jazz--some still use the terms interchangeably--and Mingus really knows how to mix the old and the new.
'Sues Changes,' a 17 minute ode to his wife is dizzying in its time changes--sometimes its a sweet, love song, other times its a crazy, dissolute, beautiful mess, but, somehow, it manages to be hummable.

 Jelly review: Don Pullen
I first became familiar with Pullen's distinct percussive, hand-rolling style of piano playing on Charles Mingus' Changes One and Changes Two albums in the 1970s.
I then saw him perform with Mingus in a small club in Urbana, Illinois and was captivated by his mastery of the instrument.
Like many others on this particular night, I was pleased when, due to a number of college students' raucous conversations during a particularly soft piano solo, Mingus grabbed a microphone and shouted "Shut up out there.
