Honghwamun, the main of Changgyeonggung palace, faces east as is Myeongjeongjeon hall, the main building of the palace.
Erected in 1484 during the reign of King Seongjong, this Myeongjeongjeon hall of Changgyeonggung palace was burnt down during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and rebuilt in 1616 during the reign of King Gwanghaegun.
It was confirmed through the excavation in 1984 that the original building stood on a base 20meters north to south and 18 meters west to east and the base had two stairs in its east and west sides.

The palaces were also named according to their geological location: Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung were called the East Palaces, while Gyeonghuigung was called the West Palace.
During its heyday, Gyeonghuigung comprised more than 100 halls, most of which were burnt down in two separate conflagrations, one during the 29th year of the reign of King Sunjo (1829) and the other during the 20th year of the reign of King Gojong.
During the colonial period, the Japanese renamed it Changgyeongwon, demoting it from a gung (palace) to a won (park), in an obvious attempt to diminish the authority of the Korean royal family, and built a zoo, a botanical garden, and the royal Yi Household Museum on the site.

Kuma's lackadaisical attitude towards strangers entering the premises is a fitting symbol of this busy but low-key guesthouse whose best feature is proximity to tourist sites, like Changgyeonggung palace.
The twin option at first glance might appear pricey but price notwithstanding, Guesthouse Korea has several advantages including low cost for single travellers, free access to a clothes washing machine (hang dry on the roof) and opportunities to socialise with a thoroughly international crowd.

The Changgyeonggung was built in 1484 by order of the King Seongjong (the 9th King of the Joseon Dynasty : 1469-1494) for former kings and princes.
The original residential palace was destructed by fire during the 6 years of 'Imjinwaeran' (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592) and several other fires swept many constructions of the palace.

Centuries-old palaces, gates, shrines, gardens and priceless art collections in museums attest to the illustrious past of the city, while the glistening facades of soaring skyscrapers and the bustling traffic represent its vibrant present.
In Seoul, the must see attractions are the ancient royal palaces dating back to the Joseon Dynasty: Gyeongbokgung, Deoksugung, Changdeokgung, and Changgyeonggung.
Jongmyo Shrine, the royal ancestral shrine of Joseon, along with Huwon (the Rear Garden), adjacent to Changdeokgung, are noted for their beautifully landscaped gardens and classical structures.
