The Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine ordered a cull of 113 500 chickens at six farms after the H5N2 virus was found in dead fowl.
Five farms in central Taiwan's Changhua county were ordered to slaughter 82 500 birds, while 31 000 would be culled at a farm in the southern county of Kaohsiung to avoid the spread of the virus, deputy director Yeh Ying said in a statement.
The origin of the infection remains unknown but the bureau said it suspected the virus could have been spread by migratory birds or vehicles moving from one farm to another.
