Channichthyidae are much more highly infected in these areas and with higher diversity of parasites - in total 12 species.
The low infection of channichthyids in the Weddell Sea is probably associated with the presence of shelf glaciers (instead of a sub-coastal environment) and the feeding of these fishes mainly on pelagic organisms.
No one digenean species is specific for Channichthyidae, but in areas others than the Weddell Sea Channichthyidae are important hosts of eight digenean species.

The icefishes (or white-blooded fishes) are a family (Channichthyidae) of perciform fish found in the cold waters around Antarctica and southern South America.

Although many of the Antarctic species have antifreeze proteins in their body fluids, not all of the Antarctic species do, some sub-polar species either produce no or very little antifreeze, and antifreeze concentrations in some species are very low in young, larval fishes.
Another interesting aspect of Notothenioid physiology is that while the majority of animal species have hemoglobin (or other oxygen-binding and oxygen transporting pigments)in their blood, the Notothenoids of the family Channichthyidae do not.
These fishes are able to survive without hemoglobin in part because of the high oxygen content of the cold waters of the Southern Ocean, but a variety of other adaptations also help to compensate for difficulties that would otherwise be caused by this novel physiological trait.

Perciform fishes are the best represented order with the Zoarcidae (5 genera, 5 species), Nototheniidae (10 genera, 26 species), Bathydraconidae (7 genera, 7 species) and Channichthyidae (5 genera; 8 species) families.
It is interesting to note that glomeruli (the main filtering structures of the kidney) are absent in these species.

Only a few species of Antarctic fishes, most of which inhabit near-bottom waters, occur on a wide-spread scale.
From the investigations that were carried out in 1975-89 from the R/V Profesor Siedlecki, it was determined that 14 species of fish are widespread, all of them belong to two families (Channichthyidae and Nototheniidae).
This paper presents the results of investigations of the distribution of these fish species with respect to the density of their occurrence and identifying sets in particular regions.

 Abstract
Mapping of 5S ribosomal genes revealed independent evolution of sex-linked heterochromosomes in two closely related teleostean species, Pagetopsis macropterus and Chionodraco hamatus (suborder Notothenioidei, family Channichthyidae).
We have compared the chromosomal features of two white-blooded icefish, Pagetopsis macropterus and Chionodraco hamatus (family Channichthyidae) by conventional cytogenetics and FISH, in order to recognise possible homeologies between the chromosomes involved in the sex-linked heteromorphism and to clarify the rearrangements they originate from.
In both species a system of multiple sex-linked chromosomes (X1X1X2X2/X1YX2) has been recognised, with males showing an unpaired largeY chromosome (metacentric in P. macropterus and subtelocentric in C. hamatus) that originates from fusion of an autosome and an early Y chromosome, morphologically similar to the X (acrocentric in P. macropterus and submetacentric in C. hamatus).
