Chanson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A singer specialising in chansons is known as a chansonnier.
Early chansons tended to be in one of the formes fixes, ballade, rondeau or virelai, though some composers later set popular poetry in a variety of forms.
The earliest chansons were for two, three or four voices, with first three becoming the norm, expanding to four voices by the 16th century.

The chanson before 1500 is preserved mostly in large manuscript collections called chansonniers.

Musical Forms - Chanson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The first important chanson composer was Machaut, who may have invented the treble-dominated type of song in two, three or four parts, with its rhythmically irregular, decorated melodic lines.
Machaut's chansons were succeeded by those of two overlapping generations: a 'mannerist' group delighting in rhythmic and notational complexity and a younger group whose simpler songs foreshadowed those of the early 15th-century Burgundian school, represented at its best by Dufay and Binchois.
After 1550 chanson composers such as Arcadelt, Lassus and Le Jeune were increasingly influenced by the Italian madrigal, but the simpler type, strophic and with the voices predominantly in the same rhythm, flourished as the 'voix de ville' or 'vaudeville'.

 HOASM: The French Chanson
The popularity of the chanson is attested by hundreds of transcriptions for the lute and arrangements for solo voice with lute accompaniment which were published during the sixteenth century in both France and Italy.
The chansons published at Antwerp were mostly by Franco-Flemish composers, chiefly Gombert, Clemens non Papa, Pierre de Manchicourt and Thomas Crécquillon.
Although the chanson composers of the Paris-school type dominated the French musical scene during the earlier part of the sixteenth century, we may regard their production as a brief (but important) "intermezzo" in the development of the chanson from Josquin to Lassus.

They took delivery of Chanson d'Armor during the Southampton Boat show and with the Windermere Winter Series fast approaching were keen to get the teething problems that are often experienced when buying a new boat sorted out before the start of November.

 English Chanson
It was interesting that many performers at some point in their evening had a go at defining what English Chanson is. The Drill Hall publicity team had also had problems with the idea, and I had had to explain it several times to various people, trying to avoid defining it by what it isn’t.
“English chanson is concerned with a knowledge and understanding of mainland Europe songwriting culture,” opines Attila The Stockbroker, “and its application in an English context.
All of this makes English chanson seem like a slavish imitation of European models, but it’s more about a particular attitude to songwriting and a particular kind of mood or feeling – which is to be brave, intelligent, challenging, emotionally sophisticated.

Anyone who has studied French painting of the second half of the nineteenth century can only be delighted with the initiative of the museums in Arras, Quimper, and Dublin to devote a major exhibition to the work of Jules Breton (1827–1906).
The final chapter, "La chanson des blés," explains the swift decline in popularity of this academic artist after his death and then gives a concise summary of his career, again extensively highlighting the Millet–Breton contrast as well as Breton's influence on Western European painting.
The book concludes with a detailed list of the exhibited works, a chronological biography, a list of the Salons and exhibitions at which Breton's paintings were displayed (with an indication of which works are currently in public collections), and an extensive bibliography.

"Chanson" refers to French popular vocals, particularly romantic ballads, and the style spans back at least as far as music recording technology, and survives well into the present day.
This set of comedic oldies was, I'll admit, a bit too rarified for simple little old me. Chevalier gallops through one brisk, musichall-ish tune after another; I'm sure the wordplay is a gas for those fluent in French, but for those of us who aren't as adept, the musical end may fall flat.
Marie-Louise Damien, who went by the stage name Damia, was one of the great practitioners of a style called the "realistic songs." These were popular compositions known for their outlandishly morbid lyrics, typically about a fallen girl whose flirtation with big city ways led to her tragic death by disease or gruesome accident.

The caveat is this: Where zydeco has become far more R&B-inflected, Delafose takes the music back to its traditional roots, the common ground shared between zydeco and Cajun styles.
"La Chanson Perdue" is Delafose's third Rounder CD and again shines with his smooth, high-mid range vocals and impeccable sense of how to make his creole French bend to fit the rhythms.
His accordion playing is spirited but still in clear cahoots with Steve Nash's rubboard, and especially when the band slips into more Cajun vibes, as on "Tite Monde," you can hear for certain how much rural Louisiana Cajun French has informed Delafose.
