Topic: The Chantels

In the News (Sun 29 Nov 09)

  The Chantels
In fact, the Chantels' first single was the second release on the label that was to be the future home of Little Anthony and the Imperials, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, and The Bobbettes.
The Chantels first live performance was at a Jocko show at the Apollo Theatre (Jocko was a legendary New York disc jockey at the time) in which the group was not even on the bill.
Although the Chantels were one of the first female vocal groups of the rock era to have an album released under their own name, they were dropped by End in April 1959.

Although starting in the late 50's, the Chantels consisting of Arlene Smith, Sonia Goring, Lois Harris, Jakie Landry, and Rene Minus were signed to Golner's End record label in the early summer of 1957.
In December 1958, the Chantels released the Arlene Smith composition "Maybe" by late winter it reached number 14 on the Pop charts and number 2 on the R and B charts.

One of the very first girl groups, the Chantels are best-known for their 1957 hit "Maybe." Between 1957 and 1963, the trio racked up a number of hit singles, but none of them
Smith wrote all of the group's early material and she was the one who convinced the other girls -- whose age ranged between 14 and 17 at the time -- to audition for Richard Barrett, a record producer and a member of the doo wop group the Valentines.
The Chantels continued performing until the end of the decade; they officially disbanded in 1970.

This was another top forty pop smash and The Chantels had become one of the top vocal groups of the late fifties and one of the best "girl groups" ever.
By 1963 The Chantels were basically at the end of their history even though Sandra Dawn was lead singer for a couple of recordings for the Ludix label, and various odd releases were done for Verve, 20th Century Fox, Roulette, and RCA as late as 1970.
Back in 1957 there was magic in the recording studio as a then fifteen year old Arlene Smith sang her heart out with her friends filling in the part of the angelic choir creating a singular sound that lives on to this day.

Richard Barrett played the piano along with supportive bass and drums for this Chantels recording of the Arlene Smith composition "Maybe." The single was released in December; by January 20, 1958, it was heading up the pop charts and a week later was climbing the rhythm and blues charts.
The Chantels' third single for End was "Every Night (I Pray)," another gem that sounded suspiciously like Arlene's writing style although it showed George Goldner's name on the record.
Chantels records were still being issued, except that the lead was one Richard Barrett and the label was Gone, an affiliate of End.

 Arlene Smith and the Chantels
Of course i am too young to have actually been a fan of the Chantels during their heyday, however I remember listening to their music on oldies stations while I was growing up and to me her voice on those songs is about as erotic as they come...
That was certainly the case when the Chantels were joined on stage by Fred Willis of the Calvanes for a ROCKING cover version (answer record?) of the song "Hit the Road Jack".
The Chantels were originally a quintet: Arlene Smith, Lois Harris, Sonia Goring, the late Jackie Landry, and Renee Minus.

The Chantels, the early all-girl doo-wop group whose "Maybe" and "Look in My Eyes" are rock 'n' roll classics, headlined the Southern California Doo-Wop Society's Show #34 at the Petroleum Club on October 28, 2000.
Luckily, The Chantels were able to find a new lead singer, Ami Ortiz, who sounds exactly like the old Arlene Smith of the '50s.
Both sides were included on the second Chantels LP (End 312) even though none of the original Chantels were present on the recordings.

The Chantels, the all-girl New York doo-wop group whose "Maybe" and "Look in My Eyes" are rock 'n' roll classics, and Los Angeles' own Calvanes performed at the Southern California Doo-Wop Society's Show #34 at the Petroleum Club on Saturday night, October 28, and the show was a winner on all counts.
On hand in the current Chantels quartet were three of the original five members--top soprano Lois Harris Powell, lower alto and bass Renée Minus White, and second soprano Sonia Goring Wilson--plus 25-year-old lead singer Ami Ortiz.
Displaying the amazingly intricate, soaring harmonies that made them a favorite more than forty years ago, The Chantels brought the crowd to a standstill with one near-perfect performance after another.

The Chantels' secret weapon, of course, was lead singer Arlene Smith (all of 16 at the time the first songs here were recorded, including the often-covered "Maybe").
Smith's vocals are astonishing--she has the sheer lung power of an opera singer, without a hint of weakness in any part of her range, and her phrasing conveys every nuance of the pain and confusion of teenage romance.
The Chantels enjoyed two further US Top 30 pop hits with "Look In My Eyes" and "Well I Told You", but they lacked the distinctiveness of the earlier releases.

The first LP ever issued on the End label was a natural product of the success of "Maybe," one of the great ballads to come out of the rock & roll boom and one of the most beloved R&B singles ever to emanate from the orbit of label owner George Goldner.
For the album, all Goldner did was assemble the two sides of each of the existing six Chantels singles, but it's still a pretty impressive body of music, a fact that makes it a tribute to producer Richard Barrett.
