Chantilly and Senlis: A Castle and A Town Fit for Kings
At Chantilly (allow at least 45 minutes by car from Paris, an hour if there is traffic) are the monumental stables which had been commissioned by one of the castle’s former owners: Henri-Louis, Duc de Bourbon, who wanted to be reincarnated as a horse.
The riches and rarities of Chantilly are such that visitors are asked to partake of the guided tour, usually given in French.
Senlis and Chantilly are rewarding destinations for a day trip from Paris, resplendent with art, history--and horses.

This study explores the creation and subsequent history of the manuscript Chantilly, Musée Condé 564 (the "Chantilly Codex," hereinafter Ch), the central source for modern musicological understanding of late fourteenth-century music.
Armed with new codicological information and informed by a thorough re-examination of scholarship on this source, I then discuss the musical style and cultural significance of a group of ballades transmitted by this source.
There are two appendices: the first provides transcriptions of the archival documents discussed in Chapter One; the second presents an updated inventory of the contents of Ch.

 Ars Magis Subtiliter
This recording is simply the best of a very fine but still small number of discs featuring secular music of the late 14th century -- a time of great social and political upheaval, and the beginning of an era of unequalled interest in and advancement of the arts.
The two goals of sweetness and subtlety were the seemingly paradoxical ends toward which the music of the late fouteenth century strove.
All the songs in this record come from the Chantilly codex and present as clear a picture as can be presented within one recording of the song repertory of the late fourteenth century.

 H-France Reviews
If Machaut is the interpreter of his own motets (and, most likely, he is), then musical evidence--perhaps in a separate chapter--might usefully be adduced to show ways in which the idea of the spiritual journey might have affected Machaut’s compositional decisions in those pieces explicitly crafted to depict that journey.
Elizabeth Upton’s retexting of some of the Chantilly manuscript’s ballades has demonstrated fourteenth-century composers’ consciousness of the meaning--the scens--of passages fraught with political implications for the audience.[4] That the composer Machaut did--or did not--do likewise would be the next logical piece of the argument and is a possible direction for future studies.
A more extended discussion of ideas and observations about text-music interplay in the Chantilly codex can be found in eadem, "Editing Chantilly Chansons: Scribal Procedures for Text Placement and Larger Questions of Musical Style," in Essays Presented at the Colloquium ‘La Musique de la Renaissance: Nouveaux regards sur le manuscrit 564 de Chantilly,’ ed.

Chantilly Codex - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chantilly Codex (Chantilly, Musee Conde MS 564) is a manuscript of medieval music containing pieces from the style known as the Ars Subtilior.
The codex contains examples of many of the most popular courtly dance styles of its time, such as ballades, rondeaus, virelais, and isorhythmic motets.
The Chantilly Codex is known to contain music from the composers Johannes Symonis, Jehan Suzay, Pierre des Molins, Goscalch, Solage, Baude Cordier, Grimace, Guillaume de Machaut, Jean Vaillant, Franciscus Andrieu, Cunelier, and Senleches.

Medieval - Codex Chantilly: Ballades & Rondeaux Ensemble Organum/Peres / CD
On the other hand, though, Codex Chantilly: Ballades & Rondeaux is a very specialized taste; even those who fancy themselves medieval music lovers may well find much of it incomprehensible, alien, and just plain weird.
And while it is a very fine album, comparing it to the other major CD devoted to the Codex Chantilly, Ars Magis Subtiliter by Ensemble P.A.N. on New Albion, is like comparing an apple to an orange even as both discs share several selections.
While the jury may still be out on what might be the best survey on the Codex Chantilly, Codex Chantilly: Ballades & Rondeaux serves as a very good basic introduction to the mysterious and intoxicating music of the ars subtilior.

The Codex Ivrea, compiled between 1360-70, demonstrates a wide range of thematic concerns, and although there were those who felt that music of such calibre should not be performed before an "ordinary", ignorant audience, some of the lyrics are no more different from the stuff we get nowadays.

The Chantilly Codex, apparently compiled shortly before 1400, is easily the most famous manuscript of the Ars Subtilior.

Ensemble Organum approaches this difficult music sensibly; none of it is sacred, and what little we know about it, mostly from external iconography, suggests that voices and instruments were regarded as interchangeable elements in the papal court.
