Menorah: Definition and Links by Encyclopedian.com
The Chanukiah (Chanukah menorah) Chief importance is attached by Jewish law and custom to the kindling...the Chanukiah, a menorah specially designed for use on this holiday.
The original design for the menorah is in the Torah, and it was used in rituals in the tabernacle (portable sanctuary) and later the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.
The one exception to this concerns the Jewish festival of Chanukah, in which a nine-branched version of the menorah is used; this nine branched menorah is properly called a Chanukiah.

CHANUKAH GELT -- The American Israel Numismatic Association
Most of us still teach our children that the great 'miracle' of Chanukah was the discovery of a little jar of oil in the desecrated Temple in Jerusalem, which would have burned for only one day but, miraculously, lasted for eight.
The Hebrew word Chanukah means 'dedication' and the original festival was a commemoration of the Maccabean military victories over the Syrians and a celebration of freedom for many years before the story of the little jar of oil made its appearance in Jewish literature.
The first Chanukah was meant to replace this lost Sukkot festival and the people came to the re-dedicated temple bearing palm fronds (lulavs) and citrons (etrogs) just as they would have done on Sukkot.
