At the same Air Training Command was redesignated the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and the command activated Second Air Force and stationed it at Keesler.

Chanute Air Field opened in Rantoul in the summer of 1917, and pilots trained then and there went directly to France into the midst of WWI.
A severe wind and hail storm struck Chanute in 1962; the worst blizzard in Chanute’s history happened in 1964; and later that year, the wooden hanger, last of the original buildings built in 1917, was demolished.
Navy and Air Force weather training was consolidated at Chanute in 1977; and in 1978, the first five-service consolidated weather forecaster class began.

In 1917 Rantoul, Illinois, was chosen by the U.S. Army Air Service to train pilots for World War I. Over the next 75 years Chanute Field (which later became Chanute Air Force Base) became the premier technical training school for the USAAF and USAF.
At the time of its closure in 1993 Chanute had trained over 2 million men and women and was the third oldest active base in the U.S. Air Force.
The base was Declared closed in 1988 and was handed over to the Village of Rantoul officially on September 30th, 1993.

The 99th Pursuit Squadron began as an experiment by the Armed Forces in March of 1941, prior to the American entry into World War II to support the fl pilots who were simultaneously being trained at Tuskegee, Alabama.
Upon completion of their training at Chanute in October of 1941, the men were transferred to Tuskegee for active duty specialists and mechanics supporting the 33 pilots in training at that time.
The Experiment of 1941, the establishment of the 99th Pursuit Squadron and all supporting elements thereof, complete within the Unit, was a success far beyond the belief of many in Congress who had opposed the experiment.
