Chaouia language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chaouia is the Chaoui language, Berber language of the Chaoui people of eastern Algeria, around Batna, Khenchela, Setif, Constantine, Oum el-Bouaghi, Souk Ahras and Tebessa.
Known alternative spellings are "Shawia", "Shawiya", "Tachawit", "Thachawith", "Tachaouith", and "Th'Chèwith", but in the Chaouia language, the leading TH /θ/ sound is often reduced to an H, thus the name is pronounced "H'chawit".
As some parts of North Africa were only recently arabized, some chaoui from the urban centers got partially arabized in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Algeria - ETHNIC GROUPS AND LANGUAGES
The major Berber groups are the Kabyles of the Kabylie Mountains east of Algiers and the Chaouia of the Aurès range south of Constantine.
Perhaps half as numerous as the Kabyles and less densely settled, the Chaouia have occupied the rugged Aurès Mountains of eastern Algeria since their retreat to that region from Tunisia during the Arab invasions of the Middle Ages.
The distinction between the two groups is limited, however, because the farmers of the north are also drovers, and the seminomads of the south maintain plots of land.

In the mountainous region of the Aurès in Algeria, the children of the Chaouia Amazigh play with female dolls and as well the boys as the girls create these dolls.
The same word is used for the little female hero of the agricultural festivities of ploughing and also for the ladle that is dressed as a woman and solemnly led about to provoke rain (1938: 54).

In West of Morocco, the coastal plain Chaouia is located between Casablanca and Azemmour (south-west of Casablanca) over a distance of 65km (Figure 1).
In the case of the coastal Chaouia (semi-arid environment), the use of both chemical tracers (Cl-, Br-) and isotopes (18O, 2H,3H, 14C) has shown that rainfall constitutes the essential origin of ground water in the area.
The high salinity caused by seawater intrusion is probably limited in space to some coastal wells; neither evaporation of water before and during percolation, nor dissolution of evaporitic deposits (halite), has been found.

A farmer (center) from Zidane village, Morocco, shows his crop of ‘Chaouia’ lentil variety to Moroccan and ICARDA researchers.
‘Chaouia’ and ‘Abda’ both have high levels of rust resistance, produce around 2.0 t/ha and have large cream-colored seeds with yellow cotyledons, which are preferred by consumers.
Dr Bouazza Sakr, the national food legume breeder in Morocco informed Dr Sarker that ‘Chaouia' was developed from a cross between 'Laird' and 'Precoz' (ILL4605) and ‘Abda’ was a derivative of L-24 and 'Precoz.' Foundation seed production of these varieties is being carried out by INRA, Settat and SONACOS, a semi-government company.

A tough, capable guerrilla leader during Algeria's 71-year war with France, Chaabani had turned the Aures and part of the Sahara south of the range into his personal fief.
His men—historically mutinous Chaouia tribesmen whose ancestors had rebelled against Romans, Byzantines and Arabs alike—are equipped with armored cars, tanks and artillery, thus representing a more serious military threat to Ben Bella than the 2,000 Berber rebels under Hocine Ait Ahmed's command in the Great Kabylia range to the northwest.
Chaabani's rebellion grew from his resentment of Ben Bella's Defense Minister Houari Boumedienne, who after independence was won two years ago removed combat-hardened but unschooled officers from the army and replaced them with French-trained officers, many of whom had spent the war in exile.
