The region is located within the limits of the Chapada Diamantina National Park and the Marimbus-Iraquara Environmental Protection Area, and is classified as "rigorous protection area".
Geologically the area is in the domain of the terrigenous meta-sediments of the Chapada Diamantina Syneclisis and is characterized by gentle folds with north-south trending axes.
In this fold, whose axis trends north-south, is exposed the contact between the Paraguaçu and Chapada Diamantina groups: the former consists of fine grained sandstones, siltstones and argillites and the latter, represented by the Tombador Formation, is formed by sandstones and occasionally diamond bearing conglomerates.

Just to the west and south of Lençóis is the Parque Nacional Chapada Diamantina (national park) that extends through parts of four other municipalities, having a total area of 152,000 hectares (375,552 acres).
Besides having exotic flora, the park is inhabited by plenty of wildlife, such as quati (coati, related to the raccoon), cutia (agouti, a rodent the size of a rabbit), suçuarana (puma), veado (deer), onça-pintada (jaguar), araras (macaws), and curiós (finches).
The best bet for a one-day walk in the park is to see its most spectacular site: the highest waterfall in Brazil—Cachoeira Glass—a small stream that tumbles 400 meters (1,312 feet) down over a mesa, becoming nothing more than a fine mist before it reaches the bottom.
