Chapare, also called The Chapare, is a rural province in the northern region of Cochabamba Department in central Bolivia.
The majority of the territory is comprised of valley rainforests that surround the area's main waterway, the Chapare River, which is also a tributary of the Amazon River.
In recent decades, the Chapare has become a haven for the illegal cultivation of the coca plant, which can be used to produce cocaine.

Analysis suggests that the estimated increase in opium poppy cultivation in Helmand province alone accounted for 51% of the total increase in opium poppy cultivation in 1999, whilst the estimated 5,168 hectare increase in opium poppy cultivation in Nangarhar province in 1999 represented approximately 19% of the total increase.
The residual proportion of the increase was derived from the increase in opium poppy cultivation recorded in the remaining opium poppy cultivating provinces.
Nangarhar province experienced a 29% increase in opium poppy cultivation between 1998 and 1999, producing an estimated 22,990 hectares of opium poppy in the 1998/99 growing season.

After a series of violent confrontations in 1995, the seeming calm in the Chapare region of Bolivia for much of 1996 took a dramatic turn for the worse at the end of the year, and the situation remains very tense.
This violence stems from conflict generated by coca eradication in the Chapare region of the country and especially from the increase in forced eradication.
The Bolivian police confiscated and burned bicycles (the main form of transportation in the Chapare), entered people's homes without warrants and without identifying themselves (with their faces covered), stole people's belongings and destroyed legitimate crops in addition to legal and illegal coca plants.

Consideration of this tapaculo's dis- tribution, vocalizations and, to a lesser extent, plumages, informed through examination of currently recognized species limits in the genus Scytalopus both in Bolivia and elsewhere in the Andes, convinces me that it is a new taxon best described as a new species, which I propose to name: Scytalopus schulenbergi sp.

Same song is given by central La Paz and Santa Cruz populations; differs from that of populations in northern La Paz and southern Peru.

The city of Cochabamba (where I live) is midway between the cold Altiplano and the tropical lowlands, and the "department" of Cochabamba (which is like a province) stretches across the altiplano and also covers the eastern part of the Amazon.
Chapare is in the Department of Cochabamba, and is a broad, rainforest-covered plain in the Upper Amazon Basin.
Friday morning, myself, 3 other students, plus the two directors of our school (who are husband and wife) left at 5am in the morning to Chapare.
