  MIM-72/M48 Chaparral - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The MIM-72 missile is launched from the M48 fire unit, consisting of a M730 tracked vehicle fitted with an M54 missile launcher capable of holding four missiles ready to fire.
The C version of the missile, from 1974, has an improved guidance section that gives the missile an all-aspect capability, as well as a new doppler radar fuse and an improved warhead.
The Chaparral system is manually fired by visually tracking the targets, slewing the missile carrier into the general direction, and waiting for the missile seekers to "lock on" to the target.

The missile's main components are an infrared homing guidance section, an active optical target detector, a high-explosive warhead, and a rocket motor.
SEAM slaves the seeker head of the missile to the radar when in "dogfight" mode, which enables the seeker head to be uncaged, slewed toward a specific target by the aircraft radar, and made to track that particular target before being launched.
Later variants of the missile can be slaved to the radar, so when the pilot achieves a radar-lock on a target, the radar can 'tell' the Sidewinder where to look for it.

The M730 carrier vehicle was part of the M48 Chaparral anti-aircraft missile system, and was based on the M548 cargo carrier variant of the M113A1 APC.
The missile system was placed in the cargo compartment, and a cover which was held up by six bows could be erected over it for travel.
Later improvements to the Chaparral system included the introduction of the M121 smokeless rocket motor, and the replacement of the missile's expanding-rod warhead with the M250 blast-fragmentation warhead.

Chaparral was better than nothing, but it had its drawbacks, chiefly in the motor.
Because it was based on the Sidewinder, the missile was designed to be launched from an airplane while already traveling at high speed (400-500 mph).
