Auto Strut - Car Struts @ Car Parts Wholesale
In the automotive world, the term strut is used as an automotive suspension and works as a shock absorber, but is used with a different type of front suspension that eliminates the need for an upper suspension arm.
The Chapman strut is designed to act as a shock absorber and a wheel location device at the same time and is made to resist lateral forces.
His strut is commonly used as a rear suspension which is very similar to the MacPherson strut.

Strut - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
Struts provide outwards-facing support in their lengthwise direction, which can be used to keep two other components separate, performing the opposite function of a tie.
An automotive suspension strut combines the primary function of a shock absorber (as a damper), with the ability to support sideways loads not along its axis of compression, somewhat similar to a sliding pillar suspension, thus eliminating the need for an upper suspension arm.
Struts were commonly used in early aircraft to support wings, stabilizators and landing gear.

Chapman, who came from relatively humble roots, was also a businessman who introduced major advertising sponsorship into auto racing; beginning the process which changed Formula One from rich gentlemen's pastime, to multi-million pound high technology enterprise.
Even today, struts used in the rear of a vehicle are known as Chapman struts, while virtually identical suspension struts for the front are known as MacPherson struts.
Chapman, working with Tony Rudd and Peter Wright, pioneered the use of "ground effect" (where a partial vacuum was created under the car by use of venturis, generating suction (downforce) which held it securely to the road whilst cornering) in Formula One.

On a McPhereson and Chapman Strut suspension the strut has a coil spring located around it and the spring sits on a lower spring perch attached to the strut.
In addition, a shock is installed inside the hollow tube of the strut with the shock body clamped in the tube and the shock shaft is attached to the vehicle body at the upper spring perch.

Double Wishbone vs. MacPherson Strut I:The Basics - Team Integra
When turning, the entire strut column (basically the shock body) is twisted in order to turn the wheel, which would cause the spring to "wind-up"(the strut is twisting, but the spring wouldn't, causing the spring to be twisted, or wind-up).
Now in a MacPherson Strut type suspension design, the strut itself is the load bearing member, with the springs and shocks merely performing their respective duties instead of also holding up the car.
So even though the strut and shock absorber are integrated into the same housing basically, they are two different things...the strut bears the weight of the car, effectively holding the car up, and the shock absorbers counteract the movement of the springs.

 Saab Strut Assembly - Partstrain.com
The strut acts similarly to the shock absorber; however the strut has an available assembly that includes all of the basic parts including the shock absorber in one unit.
This is called the MacPherson strut, which is the most popularly used strut in the new models of the automotives in this generation.

When it comes to the Ford Explorer Strut, you will find two very similar, yet slightly different types: the MacPherson strut, which is used on front wheels, and the Chapman strut, which is used in the back.
