The new company, Chapters Inc., was officially created in April 1995 and the first two book superstores were opened in November 1995.
Chapters also tried to make its stores as pleasant as possible adding couches, Starbucks coffee shops, and elegant decorating and did not discourage the reading of books inside the store.
In 2001 Indigo launched a hostile takeover and bought Chapters, but kept both the Chapters and Indigo brands; subsequently a number of Chapters locations were closed if they in close proximity to Indigo.

Months of uncertainty came to a close on Thursday, February 1, 2001, when the conditions of the bid for Chapters Inc. (Chapters) by Trilogy Retail Enterprises LP (Trilogy) were met in time for the midnight expiration deadline.
The final offer by Trilogy, being $17 a share for about 73 per cent of Chapters for a total value of approximately $121.5 million, was twice raised since the original offer of $13 a share for a 50.1 per cent stake of Chapters was made in late November 2000.
Chapters also dropped its announced issuer bid and declared a special dividend of $.50 a share for shareholders of record on February 12, 2001.

Chapters moved quickly to open two superstores under its new name by year's end.

The profit decline reflects a 5.4% drop in retail earnings to C$15.8 million as well as a loss of C$8.5 million from Chapters Online and a C$3.4 million loss from Pegasus Wholesale that offset one-time gains of C$2.
