 Characins
Characins can be recognized by the presence of a short, stublike adipose fin located between the tail and the dorsal fin.
The largest characin is the African tigerfish, which reaches a length of about 1.4 m (about 4.5 ft), while the smallest is the Bolivian pygmy blue characin, which has a length of about 1.5 cm (about 0.6 in).
Even though characins tend to be small, with bodies that are fusiform (tapered on both ends) or laterally compressed, many species have body and mouth shapes adapted for capturing a variety of prey and other food.

Aquarium Fish Deals - About Characins (CYPRINIFORMES) - Tetra, Piranha, Pacu, Hatchetfish, Silver Dollars, Pike, Gar
Many Characins are favorite aquarium fishes because of their bright colours and small size, and are peaceful in the community aquarium.
Characins are basically shoaling fishes; an ideal situation would be to have a shoal of a single species in an aquarium, planted at the back and sides, with plenty of free swimming space in the middle.
In nature the majority of Characins are carnivorous, fortunately, in the aquarium, they are not so demanding and will take almost anything that is offered, although you should try to provide a proportion of live food for them to thrive.

Pacu also are very voracious egg eaters, so if they do spawn it is important to get the eggs away from the parents as quickly as possible after laying has occured.

Pacu - A Giant Characin of the Amazon, by David Marshall   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
In recent times a large number of dramatically written press reports, originating both in Europe and North America, have spoken of large pirhana species which uncaring pet keepers have deliberately released into various waterways once these fish have outgrown their aquaria.
Many of these stories have turned out not to relate to the various pirhana species but to their close characin cousins the pacus.
I have to say that I did enjoy the company of the two pacu, watching them grow and change body colours is the real delight of keeping them, and I missed them after they left my fish house, but in all honesty would never keep these particular fish again.

The blue diamond tetra (characin!) is actually silver-blue with a fine fl lateral stripe that ends in a distinguishable “spot” at the caudal peduncle.
Although some aquarists have recently introduced this lovely fish into their community tanks, the blue diamond is rarely kept in an aquarium, which probably accounts for the limited availability of information on this characin.
Although it is a lively and generally peaceful fish, the blue diamond characin (not tetra!) is also a carnivorous fish, unlike many of its omnivorous tetra relatives.
