CHARACTER - LoveToKnow Article on CHARACTER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
From the latter usage a character becomes almost identical with reputation ; and in the sense of giving a servant a character, the word involves a written testimonial.
A further development is the use of character to mean an odd or eccentric person ; or of a character actor, to mean an actor who plays a highlycoloured strange part.
Well-known examples of such characters are those of Theophrastus and La Bruyre, and in English, of Joseph Hall (1574-1656) and Sir Thomas Overbury.

 Building Character
The Actor is a character distinct from the player, with its own personality, characteristics, and, to some extent, mind (Figure 1).
Because the character (the Actor) on the screen is a separate entity and dissociated from the player, it's not too disturbing when the Actor acts of its own accord in certain situations.
Any design that objectifies the character (that is, encourages you to think of it as an object rather than a living being) will prevent players from empathizing with it and relating to it.

The director is disappointed that she isn’t as good an actor as he thought when he cast her, and she’s embarrassed that her work is false.
Then the actor does a peculiar bit of alchemy when she conjoins her simple action (dismissal) with her character’s action (trying to get a date) with her character’s words ("Is that your real hair?").
In the context of your real life, the self-righteousness was understandable, but in the context of the play, it’s evident that your character is going crazy, because she has no apparent reason for being so self-righteous and turning that self-righteousness into murder against an innocent person.

I usually think of character actors as the talented actors who play a variety of supporting roles and actually act, as opposed to movie stars, who basically play themselves.
It's often been said that British actors are all character actors by default, and there does seem to be something to that.

This is a good start, because it immediately gets the actor away from thinking of the character as divorced from himself, someone he "puts on," and, therefore, someone who will exist only in two dimensions, without any fundamental life force.
a "serious" actor being someone who is interested in exploring how deeply and broadly they can mine their own experiences and sensibilities to exploit them creatively in the acting craft.
I see a lot of "method actors" who are quite believable as long as their characters are close to home, but they have a hard time when the text requires a stretch.

Ford's believability as an adventure hero is also aided by the obvious fact that he does most of his own stunts, which adds to the credibility of his characters and detracts from his health.

There's one character fanlisting out there (which shall not be named) and the layouts always, without fail feature the actress and not the character, as do almost all of the codes.
Even if they are made with good intentions, if an actor fanlisting only features the actor as one character in the layout, it makes me wonder if the owner really just likes that character and isn't an overall fan of the actor.
