Character actor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A character actor is an actor who predominantly performs in similar roles throughout the course of a career.
Some character actors have distinctive voices or accents which in the opinion of casting directors limit their suitability for most leading roles; actors such as James Earl Jones, Selma Diamond and Julie Kavner have been able to turn this to their advantage, often in voice-over work.
This notwithstanding, a hallmark of many great character actors is that their names are not widely known yet their faces or voices are instantly recognizable; Paul Henreid, Sydney Greenstreet, or Barry Fitzgerald are some examples.

The second eldest of the three acting Barrymores (Lionel, Ethel and John), she was initially a leading actress of the stage but in later years became a renowned character actress.
One of my all-time favorite actresses, she could be classified as a "one-hit wonder" like many stars so connected to a singular role, and to be sure, she performed little else.
Diminutive in size but gigantic in her talent, this wonderfully dazzling character actress is a joy to watch.

Last Monday, over 500 young women applied to be chosen as one of 15 finalists competing to play a yaya character on a TV series.
The 15 finalists were presumably all amateurs in the field of acting, so they were initially chosen mainly for type, character, temperament and appropriateness to the yaya role.
Let's hope that, when "To the Max" finally chooses its winner this week, she will play her yaya role well, and it will lead to a good career for her as a character actress on television.

 Halfbakery: Best Character Actor Award
I don't think there's any requirement for the Best Supporting Actor to be a "main" character in order to be eligible - notable, yes, but the most notable performance doesn't have to be the longest.
And I'm not sure "character actor" is the right term anyway; you could easily class someone like Steve Buscemi as a "character actor" even in films like Ghostworld where his role is fairly central.
A lot of times I find myself saying, "That movie blew...but you gotta see it for [insert character actor]...the supporting actor." A "good" actor and a "celebrity" actor are two different things and winning awards often validates fame and not necessarily a person's skills.
