Character Dance in our own Time
Character dance finds itself in an odd position, as it stylises, and brings to the stage, personages and choreographies that are popular in origin.
Character dance, in its evolved form, arises as one breaks down the steps and choreographic movements, into positions of the body and the parts of the body.
Character dance is the coryphee of the Greek chorus, that speaks in the chorus' name, though acknowledged nonetheless as an individual by all.

Dances were primarily accompanied by the beat of various types of drums, as well as string instruments, chimes, reedpipes, and other percussion instruments.
The dances, like the Mashed Potato, the Frug, the Swim, and the Twist, took from the basic movement vobcabulary of the African tradition, and therefore were related to jazz dance, but the beat was without the swing of jazz music.
Dance in videos is used virtually as a moving background for the singers of the musical group (similar to the teenage dance shows of the 1960s).

As it gradually become possible for amateur dancers to dance for a living, the concept of professional standards was born, in terms of physique, musicality and acting ability.
Though dance still formed only a small part of operatic and theatre productions, the dance compositions themselves were no longer choreographed as they had been at Court, where they were observed from all sides.
The original elements of the popular and social dances are still to be found in the Folk and National dances of today, as well as in the more stylised and sophisticated form of Character dance.
