Charlie Thorson: Character Design In Classic Animation
Charlie Thorson was a character designer or, as Schlesinger termed it, a character model man. In the assembly-line method of cartoon production refined by Disney Studios in the early 1930s, and later copied by all its competitors, the position of character designer was of utmost importance.
Sometimes the design of the characters was determined by studio competitions; several employees would submit drafts of the proposed characters for a story, and the final design would be chosen by formal or informal voting.
Character designers are certainly not as crucial to the art of animation as animation directors and studio heads, but until their roles in the creation of our animation classics are recognized, our understanding of the craft and the process will be incomplete.

Design Goals and Principles The fundamental design goal of Unicode is to create a unique encoding for the characters of all scripts used by living languages.
When designing a universal character code, the Unicode designers acknowledged the issue and analyzed which character elements have to be encoded as code elements to represent the scripts of Unicode across multiple languages.
Unicode characters are 16-bit entities; the standard does not make any explicit statement about the order in which the two bytes of the 16-bit characters are transmitted when the data is serialized as a stream of bytes.

A character entity reference is an SGML construct that references a character of the document character set.
The character entity references in this section are for escaping markup-significant characters (these are the same as those in HTML 2.0 and 3.2), for denoting spaces and dashes.
Display of glyphs for these characters may be obtained by being able to display the relevant [ISO10646] characters or by other means, such as internally mapping the listed entities, numeric character references, and characters to the appropriate position in some font that contains the requisite glyphs.

 Gamasutra - Features - "Building Character" [07.20.00]
This difference utterly splits character design into two entities that I will refer to as the "Avatar" and the "Actor." The Avatar is simply a visual representation of the player's presence within the game world.
From a design point of view, the Avatar is a cipher, an empty vessel waiting to be filled and given purpose by the player.
Because the character (the Actor) on the screen is a separate entity and dissociated from the player, it's not too disturbing when the Actor acts of its own accord in certain situations.

Lara Croft is possibly the worst example of character design in video games - sure, the original game was astonishing on its release, but it was the designers' cynical exploitation of the average video gaming demographic of the time (young males) that led to Lara's inclusion in the game.
The only characters I've noticed in recent years with any potential for being memorable (if not truly iconic) are the monkeys from Sony's Ape Escape, and also the monkeys from Sega's Super Monkey Ball – the former because of their irrepressibly cheeky nature (and penchant for dressing up), the latter for the danish pastry ears.

Character, on the other hand, refers to what's underneath — the human heart, the essential nature.
