Characteristics of common wasps and bees - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While easily confused at a distance or without close observation, there are many different characteristics of bees and wasps which can be used to identify them.
^ Since the barbed stinger evolved for combat with other bees, the invariable outcome of stinging a mammal or bird is that the stinger becomes lodged in the victim's skin and tears free from the honeybee's body, leading to her death within minutes.
As such, there is rarely any evolutionary advantage for a bee to sting a mammal to defend itself; honeybees will generally only sting when the hive is directly threatened, whereas honeybees found in the field or on a flower will rarely sting.

Wasp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most familiar wasps belong to the Aculeata, a division of the Apocrita, whose ovipositors are modified into a venomous stinger.
Unlike most species of bee queens, the wasp queens only live for one year although exceptions are possible.
She is rather the reproductive element of the colony as all members of the colony are theoretically direct genetic descendants of the queen.

 World Almanac for Kids
Social parasites are bees that kill the resident queen and force the workers to raise the young parasitic bees.
Bees are divided into a number of families, largely on the basis of mouthparts and other characteristics that are difficult to see without dissection.
One of the principal characteristics of this large, worldwide family is the pollen-carrying brush, or scopa, on the underside of the abdomen of females (except for parasitic forms).

Barrow Borough Council - Bees & Wasps
The common wasps are about 14mm long and brightly banded in yellow and fl, whilst the Hornet which is the least aggressive of all the wasps is larger and marked in yellow and brown.
Bees and wasps are generally social and live in colonies, nests or hives.
Wasp and bee stings around the throat may lead to respiratory obstruction or may be directly toxic causing faintness, respiratory difficulty, vomiting diarrhoea and perhaps urticaria.

Urban IPM: Insects: Bees, Hornets, and Wasps: Honey Bees and Africanized Bees
The Africanized bee is a hybrid of the African and European honeybee. It is almost identical in appearance to the European subspecies of honeybee and identification requires microscopic measurements or DNA analysis in a laboratory.
The new bees however produced less honey and due to their highly defensive nature they were kept in a box with queen excluders (slats that allow only the smaller workers to fly out), to stop them ever reproducing in the wild.
In the wild honey bees commonly build their hives in tree cavities, hidden away from predators, however, very few wild honey bees are left due to a pest known as the varroa mite and the large majority of existing honey bees are kept in apiaries.

 Bees
Both Bees and Wasps sting their victims using a similar process but there is an essential difference, especially important when the victim being stung is a human-being.
Common in higher elevations, it nests in shady evergreen forests around parks and camps in the western mountains and the eastern Appalachians.
Bee suits are made with smooth rip-stop nylon which does not allow wasps and bees to hold on.

 Other Insects- Bees, Hornets, Wasps
Wasps generally are considered beneficial insects because they feed on other insects, but control often is necessary when wasps build their nests in undesirable locations.
Paper wasps, also known as umbrella wasps, often suspend their single-comb nests from the eaves of houses, porch roofs or other horizontal surfaces.
Because social wasps like yellow jackets and hornets are active outside the nest during the day, control measures should be instituted at night when most of the colony is in the nest.

Bees periodically stop foraging and groom themselves to pack the pollen into specialized pollen baskets which are on the legs of honeybees and some other species, and on the ventral abdomen on other species.
Drone bees are the male bees of the colony.
The primary purpose of a drone bee is to fertilize a new queen.

 General overview of the Hymenoptera
Bees are important pollinators of many flowering plants, and tiny fig wasps are solely responsible for pollinating the the many species of figs.
The parasitic wasps are perhaps the most diverse members of the Hymenoptera, and also some of the most poorly known.
Parasitic wasps (and the rest of the Apocrita)possess the constricted waist common to more typical bees and ants but have an ovipositor more like that of the sawflies.

Bees Wasps Spiders Stinging Insect Removal
Bumble bees are big, fuzzy insects recognized by almost everyone by their robust shape and fl and yellow coloration.
However, bumble bee nests are often found in yards, flowers beds, wood piles, or walls in high traffic places where the threat of being stung is great.
Distinguishing characteristics are the presence of three pairs of eyes arranged in a semicircle on the forepart of the head and a violin-shaped, dark marking immediately behind the semicircle of eyes with the neck of the violin pointing towards the bulbous abdomen.

They have combinations of characteristics that other insects do not have, but some flies, beetles and other insects mimic Hymenoptera in appearance and are often mistaken for them.
In wasps and bees the first subsegment of the tarsus is much larger than the others and is called the metatarsus.
The bodies of both bees and wasps may be very hairy or with only a few hairs.

Most beekeeper groups would welcome an invitation to help develop training exercises, where bees would be used to simulate an actual attack and allow rescuers an a opportunity to practice their skills.

 Bees
Bees are beneficial insects because they produce honey and pollinate crops.
The main difference is that bees provide their young with pollen and honey, while wasps eat animal food, insects, or spiders.

Hornets and Wasp Control - Getting Rid of Wasp and Insect Hornet Nests
The digger wasps, cicada killers and burrowing spider wasps cause concern because of their activity in lawns or other high traffic areas and can be controlled by applying residual dusts such asDELTA DUST into the burrows.
Paper wasps, hornets and yellow jackets construct nests of a paper-like material which is a mixture of finely chewed wood fragments and salivary secretions of the wasps.
For these hornets we recommend a Wasp and Hornet Killer, spraying into their wasp nest to get a quick knock down then an insecticidal dust like Delta Dust to dust into the their entrance at night....wear protective clothing and try not to use any lights...even at that you still can get stung.

Swarms of honey bees are attracted to the limb or tree or nestbox or hole in a people house that had previously had a swarm of bees land on it.
What I have found is that few wasp nests survive the entire season and when you try to breed and raise these wasps in your boxes that they have HUGE losses over the summer and I actually have less problems with them in my boxes now than in past years.

Urban IPM: Insects: Bees, Hornets, and Wasps: Velvet Ants
Velvet ants are not ants at all but rather solitary female wasps belonging to the family Mutillidae.
Most of these wasps are brightly colored orange or red, intersected with fl in typical wasp style.
However, if the wasp population increases to very high numbers and the sting incidence rise significantly then pest control measures may be taken.

There is more to identifying types of bees than just observing the yellow and fl color commonly associated with bees.
Wasp insect identification can be hard to do because these types of insects are so small, fast moving and have a bad reputation for being aggressive.
