Materials science - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The basis of all materials science involves relating the desired properties and relative performance of a material in a certain application to the structure of the atoms and phases in that material through characterization, the way in which the material was processed (formed or created) being the main determinant of the structure and thus properties.
Modern materials science in the form we know it today is a product of the space race: the understanding and engineering of the metallic alloys (metallurgy) and other materials that went into the construction of space vehicles was one of the enablers of space exploration.
Materials science in a primitive form is thus one of the oldest forms of engineering and applied science.

 Materials Science and Engineering
The Materials Science and Engineering Department at the Johns Hopkins University is particularly suited to undertake this important task, because it is involved in research in such topics as deterioration processes, nondestructive testing methods, the measurement of the properties of materials of cultural and conservation interests, and materials processing fundamentals.
Third of the Introduction to Materials Science series, this course is devoted to a study of the mechanical properties of materials.
Topics include elements of vacuum science and technology; chemical and physical vapor deposition processes; film growth and microstructure; chemical and microstructural characterization methods; epitaxy; mechanical properties such as internal stresses, adhesion, and strength; and technological applications such as superlattices, diffusion barriers, and protective coatings.
