Characterology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Characterology is a method of character reading developed in the 1920's that attempted to combine revised Physiognomy, reconstructed Phrenology, and amplified Pathognomy with ethnology, sociology, and anthropology.
Characterology attempted to fix problems in the phrenological systems of Dr.
McCormick suggested that uses for characterology included guiding parents and educators, guidance in military promotion of officers, estimation of the kind of thinking patterns one has (whether a reasoner, or a memorizing brain), a way to judge commercial associates and competitors, guide to hiring, and a guide to marriage selection.

His aim was to establish a closer link between psychology and graphology and also a scientifically viable basis for the latter.
It was because of his links with René le Senne, the French philosopher and psychologist, that he became interested in the subject of characterology, which enquires into the foundations of personality.
Le Senne entrusted to him the task of applying characterology to graphology, with the results which we have described.

The New York Review of Books: YONDER SHAKESPEARE
I have suggested that to the extent that Shakespeare's sonnets mark the historical conclusion of the tradition of epideictic poetics, to that extent the postepideictic subject of a "perjur'd eye" becomes the governing model of literary subjectivity in literature successive to Shakespeare.
This is why it is important to insist upon what I have called specifically literary exigencies that begin before and continue after Shakespeare, for such exigencies explain why Shakespearean characterology has established itself as something uniquely authoritative in the literary history that begins in the early modern period.
This also suggests why strong writers who come after Shakespeare, even those authors who might not have read Shakespeare's sonnets, would still be very much affected by the subject of a "perjur'd eye." This Shakespearean subjectivity is authoritative and governing in the sense that, after the poetry of praise, it remains uniquely literary.

A second characterology, then, classifies adults by the childhood stage that colors their adult life, the stage at which (we might say) considerable psychic energy became fixated: an "oral" personality, a "phallic" character.
Just as the third characterology of defense, adaptation, and drive included and enlarged upon the second characterology of drive alone, so this fourth mode includes and enlarges upon the third.
In the first three characterologies (diagnostic, childhood phase, ego strategies) the two that are psychoanalytic point to a historical I, an I in time.

 S Y N T H E S I S - On Truth and Actuality By Ludwig Klages, translated by J.D. Pryce
In short, although his world-view has already been forgotten, Lipps alone—so far as we can see—among the popular professors of the last generation was enabled by his method of self-examination to anticipate and prepare a way for the study of appearance, which now has once again become practicable.
A wrong track was inevitably reached, which led not to personality, but through a weary waste of its disjecta membra, scattered abroad (so to speak) in the shape of degrees of sensitiveness, operations of association, comprehension, of observation, combination, judgment, and reactions--showing no law which might unite them, and still less the "spiritual bond".
The inevitable constraints even in neutral experiments for testing perception, judgment, and reaction may modify the mental disposition of the medium and invalidate the result; all security must vanish when it is no longer permissible to neglect the peculiarity of the object, since it is precisely this uniqueness that is to be ascertained.

Many statements made by both sides in the controversy, ever since the advent of the National Socialists to power, are of a kind which -- particularly when they claim to be objective and scientific -- reflect but little credit upon those responsible for them.
They display none of that impartial spirit in which history, anthropology or characterology can usefully be taught, and sometimes compare so unfavourably with the work of those investigators, such as Milman, Renan, Cunningham, Ripley, Keane, etc., who wrote in quieter times, that their heat and bias are immediately obvious even to the uninformed.
By restricting the following discussion chiefly to facts which are more or less established, and to authorities who are predominantly Jewish, it is hoped, in spite of the still appreciable warmth of the disputants on either side in Europe, to avoid the bias of the partisan and the speciousness of the debater.
