 The Official Time-Waster's Guide v3.0
While Sluggy is still episodic (meaning it doesn’t have a single overarching conflict that spans the entire comic) it has begun to contain truly involved stories, with character progression, foreshadowing, and complex plotting.
Many of the laughs are character driven, and in the longer Sunday strips there will often be several ‘punchlines.’ The continuous air of humor lends a farcical nature to the plot, keeping it light despite often involved drama.
Sluggy is updated daily, with rarely missed days (though they do exist.) The archive is incredible--5 years of solid comics with a variety of topics and humor.

 Tone Meshing in Practice
For Tone Meshing, the comic that does this well is Sluggy Freelance [G], and the comic that does it poorly is General Protection Fault [G].
Sluggy Freelance works because most of the time you never know whether it's going to be serious or funny on any given day.
Sluggy Freelance does tone meshing right, because it makes the duality integral to the strip, and in doing so creates a more complex whole.

A few additional characters, such as their neighbor ZoË, who plays the strip’s straight woman, and Dr. Lorna, a parody of Dr. Laura, the noted acerbic talk show psychologist, are introduced as the strip progress.
In addition, Sluggy Freelance seems to be targeted to the typical Internet user and has a tilt that the standard syndicated comic strips don’t.
Nevertheless, Sluggy Freelance sits comfortably in the top tier of comic strips out there today, and Is it Not Nifty deserves to be on every MIT student’s shelf.

Sluggy Freelance, for all those people who live in boxes, is a rich universe, filled with drama, adventure and most of all comedy.
People can be anything from demons, vampires to mad scientists and freelance bums, as long as their characters are funny, I would prefer it however if people played the characters from the comics.

Reading Sluggy led me to Keenspot and Keenspace (now known as Comic Genesis), which eventually led me to Howard Tayler’s online comic, Schlock Mercenary (which is now a part of the Blank Label Comics collective).
He gives a nice discussion of hyperfast projectiles when near-c-speed sabots are lobbed at the heroes, discusses the physics of falling in reduced gravity, and alternate propulsion systems.
Here’s a variant: Try pitting characters from Schlock Mercenary against characters from Sluggy Freelance and see which strip does better.

Of course characters do tend to go off in their own directions sometimes out of my control and I try to curb them back towards it (the ending).

 Plot Motivation
Usually dramatic plots are a consummation of some element of the strip that came before, perhaps two characters finally admitting their love for one another, or an old enemy who vowed to return finally coming back.
The strip is already changing a lot, from completely humorous to a mixture of comedy and drama, and if a plot with no motivation in the strip's humorous past is added, the effect is jarring and the storyline seems artificial and forced.
The example comics for plot motivation are Sluggy Freelance [G] and Roomies [G].

The Guide lets readers access strips by the day or by the week, so it's easy to catch up on all the complex backstory, which is necessary to really appreciate the later strips' humor and to feed the addiction that often hits newcomers after their first taste of Abrams' twisted, fan-friendly wit.
