Inside the lives of staffers in the west wing of the White House.
Following the trials and triumphs of those working behind-the-scenes in and around the Oval Office, this series perfectly portrays the shrewdness that the president and his staff require to do their jobs and the way they inter-relate in a manic environment to get those jobs done, while still managing to maintain a personal life.
The characters are perfectly rounded, the script continually sharp, and credit goes to the directors and editors who ensure such slick movement and spot-on timing on screen.

From what I could gather, their own political leanings were in the opposite direction from the shows’ characters, and they were unable to watch the show objectively, without seeing it as an hour-long commercial for politics they disagreed with.
The characters had been established by then, and really, they somehow managed to keep in character and keep their ideals while reflecting some tough issues.
The characters speak in an almost code of positions, acronyms, policies, etc., and the audience is for the most part expected to keep up.

But network realities dictate that "The West Wing" can't be a liberal fiesta all the time (darn!), so, in one episode, doveish Bartlet almost ordered Syria to be bombed back to the Stone Age after a plane carrying his personal physician was shot down.
Still, "The West Wing" sucks you in with its swiftly paced multiple story lines ("ER" creator John Wells is an executive producer), awesome cast and (most of the time) piquant and punchy dialogue.
Rather than focusing on Bartlet, "The West Wing" is really about the people in his orbit, the ones who whisper in his ear, advise him, humor him and nudge him toward positions they want him to take.

Which is a pity, as the sleekly professional cast of NBC's The West Wing richly deserves its break from character-actor limbo, and the claustrophobic set reiterates the hothouse isolation of high office.
Expressed in the show's uneasy oscillations between fifties' plot conventions (the dominance of emotional over professional relationships between men and women, the inviolability of an existing status quo) and nineties' issues (rogue states, racial profiling, homosexuality and recovery), this bifurcation saps energy from every twist of the plot.
Some characters in The West Wing initially offered meatier alternatives, but these were soon lost in the homogeneity of homosocial love.
