Linear sequence of families in Charadriiformes
: Our current sequence of families in the Charadriiformes is a conventional one, with "kind-of-rail-like" families first (Jacanidae + Rostratulidae), followed by the "shorebird" families, and ending with the "gull-like" families.
(1) the Charadriiformes consists of three major groups: (1) the Scolopaci [Scolopacidae, Thinocoridae, Pedionomidae, Rostratulidae, and Jacanidae]; (2) the Charadrii [Charadriidae, Recurvirostridae, Haematopodidae, Burhinidae, and Chionidae]; and (3) the Lari [Laridae, Rynchopidae, Stercorariidae, Alcidae, and Glareolidae].

THE FAUNA OF HELMINTHES OF CHARADRIIFORMES IN ALASKA (EXCEPT ALCIDAE)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The study material was obtained by the authors from 40 species of Charadriiformes from Alaska in 1976 and from 49 birds presented them by Professor P. Rausch.
In the meanwhile, 5 of these species are found only in Alaska, 5 species are non-arctic, and 87 species (almost 90%) are widely distributed in the Palaearctic faunal region.
The above-presented example shows that the studies of biodiversity of parasites and their zoogeographical relationships in Arctic may present very interesting material for the reconstruction of processes that occurred in the course of history.

BioMed Central | Abstract | A supertree approach to shorebird phylogeny
Order Charadriiformes (shorebirds) is an ideal model group in which to study a wide range of behavioural, ecological and macroevolutionary processes across species.
Although numerous hypotheses have been presented for subsets of the Charadriiformes none to date include all recognised species.
Here we use the matrix representation with parsimony method to produce the first fully inclusive supertree of Charadriiformes.
