 CHARANGA HABANERA
David Calzado and Charanga Habanera have been on the cutting edge of Timba since they played a seminal role in defining the genre in 1992.
The original Charanga Habanera recorded four indispensible classic albums before a whirlwind of personnel changes beginning in 1997 split them into three separate groups: Charanga Forever, Dany Lozada y su Timba Cubana, and David Calzado's new Charanga Habanera.
Charanga Habanera was chosen by the readers of timba.com as the greatest Timba band of all-time in the Timba.com awards of 2003 and CH members placed first in a number of other categories.

 Charanga:Then and Now
he Cuban charanga, an orchestra of piano, strings, vocals, flute, and percussion is traced to the charanga francèse.
Since the primary migration from France to Cuba via Haiti took place in the late 1700's and since the development of charanga orchestras mainly took place throughout the 1800's and early 1900's, it's not surprising that the flute mostly used in charanga is the Tromlitz wooden 5-key flute.
Since the 1970's, charangas have amalgamated into their sound influences from other popular forms of music, including rock and roll, jazz, RandB and various developments that had been taking place simultaneously in Cuban charanga.

Charanga Forever in the Bahamas! - Salsa Power!
Charanga Forever brought its international timba sound to Club 601 in downtown Nassau, Bahamas on New Years Eve.
Born of the 1998 split in the renowned Cuban group Charanga Habanera, the group, which still contains three members of the original Charanga Habanera, kept the dance floor hot for fans with a combination of Cuban standards, English RandB tunes, and hip-swiveling, foot-blistering timba pieces.
One or two songs were strongly reminiscent of the 1987-98 Charanga Habanera sound, but La Forever has a lighter sound with less emphasis on the bass and the darker lines of keyboard.

 La Charanga Habanera
One could say they are the new consciousness of Cuban youth, and even their name is ironic, because in the music, there is really no "charanga" (a more traditional form of Cuban music, featuring violins and flutes) but instead, a heavy rhythm section, a group of singers and several trumpets.
From all accounts, it was a typical La Charanga show but a much larger audience.
They played for more than two hours, dancing their choreographed scenes, which included some acrobatics, and stretching songs out to twenty minutes, as the singers improvised in the soneo and sang to the women, who take it like a drug and let loose.

I'm mad as hell at Artemis Records and Triloka Records and Michael Ramos, who for all intents and purposes IS the group called Charanga Cakewalk.
It starts like a weird muted dance-pop number, funky bass interacting with world-music guitar, and then bursts into flower with some big-chorded action and a hot accordion line.
Get on board now, because the next moves from Charanga Cakewalk will be a lot more important.

A slower, more laid-back form (usually performed with acoustic instruments -- accordion, percussion, bajo sexto -- that give it a less electric, more folkloric feel) is also massively popular in northern Mexico and Latin communities in the American Southwest.
That chill room style of cumbia is the template producer Michael Ramos uses for his one-man band Charanga Cakewalk.
On Loteria de la Cumbia Lounge, he mixes Spanish rap, smooth sampled percussion, lounge bar organ, jazzy electric guitar, synthesized strings, pedal steel guitar that's as much spaghetti Western as it is Latin, and a smattering of acoustic instruments, creating a bubbly soundtrack for an imaginary Mexican vacation.

 flutehistory.com: Folk flutes
The Cuban charanga, an orchestra of piano, strings, vocals, flute, and percussion, traditionally uses a wooden five-keyed flute of the type commonly imported into South American countries from France during the 19th century.
Today's musicians modify their antique instruments to help them play in the extreme high register, where Charanga flute parts usually lie.
The modern flute is also sometimes used in Charanga Orquestas.

One of Cuba's hotest and most popular young dance groups, la Charanga Habanera got together in 1988, when a group of 10 young graduates of the Escuela Nacional de Arte and other conservatories got together to do Cuban music from the 40s and 50s and got a gig in Monaco.
In 1997, they were punished with a 6 months suspension of their right to travel when a singer made as if to bare his butt on stage and another member was thought to have asked the audience if they liked marijuana.

The club future is bright for Charanga Cakewalk, but it's up to Ramos to decide whether it remains a side project or a full-on devotion.
With neither Mellencamp nor Griffin showing any sign of paring their tour schedules, that decision is sure to be anything but a cakewalk.
