Charango - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The charango is a small South American stringed instrument of the lute family, about 66 cm long, traditionally made with the shell of the back of an armadillo (not to be confused with a Cuban style of music called "charanga").
Was it born of the vihuela, bandurria(mandolin) or the lute?
It is believed the charango originated in the 18th century Andes somewhere in modern-day Potosí, Bolivia, probably from Amerindian contact with Spanish settlers.

 The Charango
The charango, on the other hand, is a single instrument, modest in the projection of its sound but uncannily able to convey the feel of the high and airy vastness of the Andean altiplano.
The charango thus was born as the local version of the Spanish stringed instruments.
Over time, the charango came to be made from the shells of the quirquincho, the abundant Bolivian relative of the armadillo, or, in the valleys, carved from solid wood.

 INCA - Authentic Instruments
The 'charango' is a tiny 10-stringed guitar made of an armadillo shell.
It is believed that the soul of the animal is kept alive by playing music and, in some charangos, the coarse hairs sparsely covering the shell continue to grow long after the instrument is made.
Only recently have wooden models of the charango family become common due to the decline in the armadillo population.

Charango is very much more laid back; it’s the kind of CD you would put on as soon as you came back from a hard day’s work simply because it is so smooth and gentle to listen to.
I expected it to grow on me, for the songs to be embedded in my memory and return to haunt me. Sadly, this proves not to be the case - the album made splendid background mood music, but somehow the magic of the previous albums is not quite there.

It is the hard shell that is used to make the resonator for the charango, specifically the one that covers the body, without the head, limbs and tail, and that is why the instrument is rounded.
The Quéchua and Aimara country folk of Peru and Bolivia prefer the charango with a flat wooden resonator and metal strings.
This version of the charango is also used in urban areas, although the strings are usually made out of nylon, giving it a deeper and clearer bass sound.

Our favorite songwriter/blogger, Grillo Villegas (ES), took the opportunity to give a brief summary of the history of this miraculously beautiful instrument and demonstrated that: one, it is not Bolivian (nor Chilean) and two, all of that does not really matter.
The master charango-player and researcher Ernesto Cavour wrote various books such as “The charango, its life, customs and misfortunes” and “The musical instruments of Bolivia”, where he affirmed that after visiting countless European museums, the “vihuela” essentially had the same physical, resonance and size of the charango.
The arrival and establishment of this instrument in the city of Potosí is well documented in the national archives, in the carvings of the San Lorenzo church in Potosí and in various colonial paintings.
