Vangelis' international commercial breakthrough followed in 1982, when his score to Chariots of Fire earned the film one of its many Academy Awards; its theme song even cracked the Top Ten on the U.S. pop charts.
Best known for his lush, Oscar-winning score to the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, Vangelis was among the most successful and admired electronic composers of his era.
Although Vangelis did rehearse with Yes for a few weeks, he never officially joined their ranks; still, he became close friends with group vocalist Jon Anderson, a frequent collaborator in the years to follow.

Splendid Magazine reviews Numina/Caul: Inside the Hollow Realm
When a CD opens with a minute of near-silence, the better to build toward an epic opening not unlike John Tesh looping the theme to Chariots of Fire in Sonic Foundry Acid, it's hard to get an accurate reading on precisely what's going on.
Numina and Caul have joined forces with some very clear ideas in mind, as evidenced by the subclassification of the disc into four-song themes ("Collapse of the Spiral Spire", "The Molten Void", "A Distant Past Fades") and song titles that evoke scenes from a sci-fi screenplay ("Uncertain Moment", "The Wind Speaks", "The Memories Blend").
How successfully these themes have been rendered will depend upon how much you've always wanted to hear Vangelis score The Dark Crystal.

Since no one is going to stand in the yard and call "Deal Me Aces, come," or enter the show ring saying "Chariots O' Fire, let's go," breeders give call names to their dogs that may or may not bear any relationship to the registered name.
The number of letters in a dog's name is limited, as is the number of dogs that can have the same registered name, so breeders vary the spelling of some names to get the point across within the prescribed number of letters while avoiding duplication.

American Composers Orchestra - From Scene to Shining Screen
Another revolution in film music, introducing the analogue synthesizer in place of the orchestra, was heralded by Vangelis in Chariots of Fire (1981), and he was soon followed by others such as Harold Faltemeyer (Beverly Hills Cop), and presently by Hans Zimmer, whose large orchestral scores are transformed by computer techniques and complex sampled sounds.
The Golden Age of Hollywood coincided with the great era of American songwriting, with many of the same composers.
A wonderfully talented composer of upbeat melodies with contemporary rhythms and imaginative instrumentation, Mancini won the Oscar for Breakfast at Tiffany's (and the song Moon River), and composed the catchy melodies (with ubiquitous Saxophone) for The Pink Panther.

Umphrey's McGee ran (sometimes literally, as was the case in an impromptu "Chariots of Fire" rendition) through songs ranging from Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" to its own jazzy title track from the new album.
Cinninger pointed to a combination of different types of memory.
The general formula for an extended Umphrey's jam on this particular night seemed to be an introductory verse, sung by Brendan Bayliss, followed by a chaotic rampage of metal-tinged notes, which finally devolved into a warm jazz-funk slide.

Lehrman, holding aloft a clenched fist and victory sign as the band struck up the theme song from the movie 'Chariots of Fire,' vowed that he, like the track stars in the film, has what it takes to win his general election race with Lt. Gov.
Thousands of highly motivated volunteers all over the state will provide Lew with the momentum not only to win the primary, but carry the general election," Karl Ottosen wrote in a November 1981 memo to Campaign Chairman Jonathan Bush.
Other campaigns had formidable consultants - John Deardourff, Bob Teeter and Roger Stone for Ned Regan, Arthur Finkelstein for Paul Curran, George Humphreys and Judith Press-Brenner for Jim Emery, John Sears for Richard Rosenbaum - but it was Lew's "well-oiled machine" that drew attention and votes.
