  Charismata
The abuses of the charismata, which had crept in at this latter place, induced St. Paul to discuss them at length in his First Epistle to the Corinthians.
The Apostle teaches that these "spiritual things" emanate from the Spirit who quickens the body of the Church; that their functions are as diversified as the functions of the natural body; and that, though given to individuals, they are intended for the edification of the whole community (I Cor., xii).
The second series of charismata (those tending to promote the outer development of the Church) is not connected with any special office.

Charismata: Rethinking the so-called Spiritual Gifts.
When the charismata or pneumatika are translated as "spiritual gifts" and conceived to be detached entities or abilities distinct from Christ and distributed by the Spirit, the fallacious misconceptions continue to be perpetuated, and the problems associated with such continue to persist, both in denial and abuse.
It is likewise the difficulty of explaining the variety of the charismata as derived from the singularity of Christic function in the commonality of Christ's indwelling in the multiplicity of Christians for the unity of Christ's Body in love.
The detachment of the charismata from Christ Himself becomes the basis of dysfunctional egoism, spiritual pride, comparison, competition, and self-exaltation, disallowing their intended purpose to facilitate the functional unity of the Body wherein we are "in Him together," Christ functioning in each in order to serve one another in love.

CHARISMATA IN THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES OF THE SECOND CENTURY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The use of charismata by the Christians of the second century may be seen in the context of Hellenistic religion, in general, and in continuity with preceding Christian uses, in particular.
In this particular section we shall be concerned with evidences for the use of charismata in the Christian groups which in retrospect are reckoned to have been orthodox, whereas in the next section we shall consider evidence for the seclusion of charismata in heterodox groups and for the eventual decline in the use of charismata.
The use of charismata and especially the widespread use of prophecy in the communities represented by the New Testament are indicative of a religious intentionality in which the sacred is experienced through extraordinary experiences.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hierarchy of the Early Church
Two charismata are mentioned, the preaching of the Word of God and the ministry of the community (iv, 11).
But the subjects of charismata in the strict sense are certainly not meant, since, in their own opinion, they do not set themselves up as teachers, but are entrusted with that office by the Spirit of God.
Miraculous charismata are perhaps spoken of in chapter xlviii, 5, but the reference is uncertain, for those Divine gifts which are mentioned in addition to faith and holiness of life, the word of knowledge and the skilful interpretation of others' words are not manifestly mystical or miraculous in their nature.

Two charismata which regard the teaching of Divine things: sermo sapientiƦ, sermo scientiƦ, the former relating to the exposition of the higher mysteries, the latter to the body of Christian truths.
The charismata, being extraordinary favours and not requisite for the sanctification of the individual, were not bestowed indiscriminately on all Christians.
The reason of this is apparent: in the infant Churches the charismata were extremely useful, and even morally necessary, to strengthen the faith of believers, to confound the infidels, to make them reflect, and to counterbalance the false miracles with which they sometimes prevailed.

If both steadily speak of 'we' or of the 'church' or the like, yet it is possible that they refer by this to the great spiritual operations in the earliest period of Christianity, of which we read in the Gospels, in Acts, and perhaps in some of the Apocrypha.
But it does mean that the charismata belonged, in a true sense, to the Apostles, and constituted one of the signs of an Apostle.
The connection of the "signs and wonders and manifold powers of the Holy Spirit" in some particular fashion with the first generation of Christians–"those who heard" the Lord, that is to say, at least the Apostolic generation, possibly specifically the Apostles–seems to be implied in HEB 2:4.

Since the church’s structure is founded upon the charismata, Volf states five distinguishable features of the charismata that have ecclesiological significance. First, the charismata must be confessions of Christ.
Second, the charismata are universally distributed among the congregation.
Both the synchronic and diachronic character of the charismata implies a dynamic from the Spirit in terms of an individual’s gifting that equals and is in conjunction with the dynamic from the Spirit in the church’s life.

His cessationism represents a failure to grasp the biblical portrayal of the eschatological outpouring of the Spirit of prophecy, expressed characteristically in the charismata, which are bestowed until the end of this age by the exalted Christ as manifestations of the advancing Kingdom of God.
Against this brief sketch of the place of charismata in biblical theology, which was largely available in the scholarship of his day, Warfield never made a reply.
But in heaven, the mirror or photograph (the charismata) are unnecessary if we can see God 'face to face.' At that point these items, which had helped preserve the somewhat distant relationship, will have served their purpose and will be discarded, since we will have the real person before us.

I have not found the continuation of the charismata to be as “well-attested” in the early Christian writings as Balyeat alleges.
All of their demonstrations of the charismata look alike, and they all claim the Spirit is speaking through them.
These implications of the charismata still being around today ought to make us examine things a little more closely before jumping onto the charismatic bandwagon or believing that only a few of them are here and not all of them.

THE CHURCH AS HOLY AND CHARISMATIC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The significant thing is that this understanding of the charismata is basic to Paul's whole concept of the Church as an organism created and sustained by the grace of God.
that [the charismata] are not a thing of the past (possible and real only in the early Church), but eminently contemporary and actual; they do not hover on the periphery of the Church but are eminently central and essential to it.
The new consciousness of the practical dimensions of the charismata which is growing throughout the Church is directly traceable to modern Pentecostalism (and, of course, indirectly to Wesleyanism).

This might be deduced from the list of charismata in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, where speaking in tongues is mentioned next to last, or from the list of placements in 1 Corinthians 12:28 which mentions tongues last.
It is probably not without significance that in the listing of the nine charismata of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 that the sixth and seventh relate to prophecy and the "discernings (diakriseis-from the same root as diakrinetosan in 14:29) of spirits," the eighth and ninth to tongues and interpretation of tongues.
The other spiritual charismata (after word of wisdom and word of knowledge and before prophecy and tongues), namely, faith, gifts of healing, and working of miracles are of course not in the realm of communication.

Only in the two great initial instances of the descent of the Spirit at Pentecost and the reception of Cornelius are charismata recorded as conferred without the laying on of the hands of Apostles.
It is of equal importance to us, to teach us the source of the gifts of power, in the Apostles, apart from whom they were not conferred: as also their function, to authenticate the Apostles as the authoritative founders of the church.
Hermann Cremer is accordingly quite right when he says that "the Apostolic charismata bear the same relation to those of the ministry that the Apostolic office does to the pastoral office"; the extraordinary gifts belonged to the extraordinary office and showed themselves only in connection with its activities.

On The Cessation of The Charismata
The New Testament expressly ties the presence of the charismata to the exalted Lordship of Jesus.
The following are a series of paraphrases of Scriptures which restate the role of the charismata in the eschatological framework outlined above: the charismata continue during this age to minister toward the (as yet unrealized) goal of complete maturity of the church.
Warfield also fails to perceive that the explicitly stated commands to fulfill the biblical conditions for the manifestation of the charismata (e.g., repentance, faith and prayer) contradict his unconditional, temporary connection of the charismata with the apostles and the introduction of their doctrine.

Of the latter are the charismata of self-restraint and healing of the sick.
The charismata now existing in the Church are those pertaining to the ministry of the Word: the ordinary charismata of increased exercise of faith and love; those of wisdom; knowledge, and discernment of spirits; that of self-restraint; and lastly, that of healing the sick suffering from nervous and psychological diseases.

Cerulean Sanctum: How Not to Be a Charismatic Headcase
What grieves me is that too many ardent Christians looking to bash all modern expressions of the charismata and charismatics love to cite that post as a reason why charismatics have been deceived by the Enemy.
One the greatest reasons for abuse of the charismata is that too many charismatics have made possessing those charismatic gifts the ne plus ultra of faith.
The abuse of the charismata today is no more a proof against it than a lack of love expressed to hurting people negates the Gospel.

Note also, that when Paul says he is praying for the readers' involvement in the charismata (Eph 1:17; 3:14f; Phil 1:5-10; Col 1:9-12), we cannot believe that his prayer is an empty, hopeless gesture.

Coming now to consider the two Charismata, "kinds of tongues" and "the interpretation of tongues," more immediately in connection with our inquiry, as so-called miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit, we shall first endeavour to ascertain some of their principal characteristics.
We have seen that Paul believes in the genuineness and supernatural origin of the divine Charismata, and he in like manner believes in the reality of his visions and revelations.
If it be admitted that his judgment as to the miraculous character of the Charismata is fallacious, and that what he considered miraculous were simply natural phenomena, the theory of the reality of miracles becomes less tenable than ever.

True charismata undoubtedly point the way to salvation; but the answer in a strict theological sense, would have to be no, since not even authentic charismata impart sanctifying grace:Theologians distinguish the charismata from other graces which operate personal sanctification: they call the former gratiae gratis datae in opposition to the gratiae gratum faciens.
The charismata are signs which serve for the edification of the Church, and which certainly may dispose the soul for the reception of sanctifying grace, but they are infinitely inferior to the ordinary means of sanctity, those which give sanctifying grace, preeminently the Sacraments.
This is certainly not to say that true charismata are not of vital importance to the Church.

We will do this by examining the two types of uses of the word group which we usually refer to as “charismata” (i.e., “doron” and “charismata”) found in the Scriptures in regard to the Holy Spirit.
After examining these two groups it will also be seen that only when we use the “charismata” terminology in a biblically correct manner will we truly understand the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church today.
In other words each Christian has received a “charismata” from the Spirit and therefore should rightfully be seen as being “charismatic” (when we use this term in a biblical way).
