Letter about John MacArthur Charismatic Chaos
I have seen a Baptist book on church growth which recommends programming of only a few, "upbeat" hymns or choruses during a service and the total avoidance of slow, contemplative and minor-key hymns, in order to preserve a positive atmosphere for "decisions." So this is not just a charismatic problem.
Charismatic leaders have created confusion by including instances of illumination, of guidance (as discussed below) and of new revelation all within the same term — "revelation knowledge." But you have adopted their confusion of concepts by, apparently, excluding the possibility of new revelation in terms so broad as to also prohibit illumination and guidance.
With reference to chapter 3 of your book, I also agree with you that the marks of a true prophet must be the agreement of his message with the scriptures and, in the case of any claimed predictive prophecy, whether the prophet's predictions are fulfilled.

Third Wave of the Holy Spirit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is part of a larger movement known as the Neocharismatic movement.
The Second "wave" occurred during the 1960s as the Charismatic movement spread throughout mainline Protestant denominations, as well as the Roman Catholic Church.
Many critics argue that the third wave differs from the charismatic movement only in terminology, not in either theology or practice, so to distinguish between the two is to make a distinction without a difference.

Charismatic Chaos - Part 6 Part 6 in a series of messages examining the modern Charismatic movement- "The third Wave" ...
They want to distance themselves from the Pentecostal, Charismatic excesses, and yet it seems to be true that the excesses that occurred in both the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements are very characteristic of the Third Wave as well.
Third Wave books and Third Wave testimonies are filled with anecdotes about people who supposedly became Christians on the basis of some miracle they saw; some supernatural wonder they saw, with little or no mention of the gospel having been proclaimed to them.
In fact, in the book, Power Evangelism, which was John Wimber's main book and sort of set this thing in motion (it's the main textbook on evangelism), there is no reference in that whole book to the cross of Christ or the doctrine of the atonement.

Charismatic Chaos is a book which ridicules Charismatics and attempts to prove that the gifts and miracles of our Lord are not for today (a view better known as "cessationism").

It is so much a part of the fabric of the Charismatic movement that it is one of the primary things that they endeavor to teach the children in that movement.
Charismatic writers are constantly warning tongue speakers that they will suffer a "letdown." This is ascribed to the Devil and the reader is urged to get refilled as soon as possible.
And there was total chaos, confusion, disorder, people pushing chairs back (as we told you before), falling on the floor, stretching out their limbs, falling over, fainting, all of that kind of chaos and confusion.

Recognizing the importance of the charismatic movement and the need for a biblical evaluation of it, MacArthur analyzes the doctrinal differences between charismatics and non-charismatics in the light of Scripture.
In Charismatic Chaos, John F. MacArthur calls for biblical evaluation and analyzes the doctrinal differences between charismatics and non-charismatics in the light of Scripture.
Unfortunately, there is far too much of this abuse going on in charismatic circles, and if charismatics themselves do not publicly acknowledge the current state of the movement, then it is left to anti-charismatics like John MacArthur to do it for them, and that means an awful lot of unfairness and bias along with it.

Charismatic Chaos, I am afraid, is unworthy of the teaching gift that God has given to John MacArthur and to the grace that has been so richly displayed in his church's life.

The main premise of the book, as we might expect, is that on the whole Calvinists tend to have the theology but neglect the working of the Spirit.
The book is clearly not an attempt to lead charismatics to the doctrines of grace, but is an attempt to lead Calvinists to accept charismatic teachings.
Secondly, this book is also not primarily a biblical apologetic for charismatic teachings.

Charismatics do not spend their time evacuating the plain teaching of Scripture by intellectualizing tongues, or claiming such as only an apostolic prerogative, or seeking to discover a scriptural cut-off time.
Charismatics are humbly grateful that this biblical truth has come alive in their experience.
Charismatics do not therefore begin with experience; rather, their experience is the outworking of scriptural truth.

To date this book is the most lucid explanation of the historical development and current beliefs of the Word of Faith Movement (WOF) within the Charismatic segment of the Body of Christ.
By their silence and in many cases endorsement of Jesse's book I am fast coming to the sobering conclusion that the WOF ministers are almost totally bereft of any concept of sound doctrine.

 John MacArthur - Theopedia
His book The Gospel According to Jesus (1988) caused controversy in the evangelical church by arguing for Lordship salvation, which maintains that good works are a necessary result and evidence of being justified before God -- in opposition to the "easy-believism" he saw becoming rampant in the church.
His book Charismatic Chaos (1992) argued that the theology and practice of Charismatics and Pentecostals regarding the "gifts of the Spirit" (healing, miracles, speaking in tongues, etc.) are incorrect at best and blasphemous at worst.
Though occasionally viewed by some groups as a controversial figure for strong critiques of freudian psychology, trends in the modern charismatic movement as well as the self-esteem movement, MacArthur is seen by many as a champion of correcting many of the ills of evangelical Christianity.

 MacArthur & Hayford
Hayford has authored more than two dozen books, and is also a prolific "hymn" writer, composing more than 400 popular charismatic "gospel songs, including "Majesty." The lyrics promote the false charismatic "kingdom now" philosophy in which Christians are thought to be able to exercise kingdom authority over sickness and the devil this present hour.
In 1997, in Jack Hayford's book, Pastors of Promise: A Practical and Passionate Call for Faithful Shepherds (Gospel Light Publications), John MacArthur is found praising Hayford along with 29 other so-called "Christian" leaders (among whom are Neil Anderson, Robert Schuller, Bill Hypels, Chuck Colson, Bill Bright, James Ryle, Greg Laurie, and the late John Wimber).
Nevertheless, Hayford is a promoter of this ecumenical, charismatic, psychologized men's movement.
