Chariton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri.
The county was organized in 1820 from part of Howard County and was named from the Chariton River.
In the county the population was spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 23.70% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 22.30% who were 65 years of age or older.

The Chariton River itself is channelized in Missouri from Highway 136 in Putnam County to its confluence with the Missouri River in Chariton County.
The lower Chariton was straightened in the early 1900s under the auspices of drainage districts in both Macon and Chariton counties (L. and C. Dunham, pers.
In Adair County, channelization efforts were made as early as 1912 when landowners taxed themselves to operate a dredge boat to create a ditch to replace the natural channel.

After the move of the county seat to Keytesville in 1833, the court built a brick, two-story, square courthouse with four rooms below and a courtroom above.
A fire in the clerk's office, apart from the courthouse, destroyed all County Court records November 11, 1861, and fires set by Confederates on September 20, 1864, destroyed the courthouse.
By 1865 the Chariton County Court ordered the treasurer, Hale T. Chellis, to act as commissioner and examine courthouses at Macon, Columbia and Fayette, obtaining dimensions, costs, etc. before reporting back to the court.

 Chariton River
The Chariton River forms the boundary between Putnam and Schuyler counties as it enters Missouri from Iowa.
Upon entering Adair County the meandering stream abruptly becomes a relatively straight, man-made waterway designed to move water quickly and efficiently across the farmland of Macon and Chariton counties, emptying its contents into the Missouri River near the Dalton Bottoms Public Fishing Access.
