Association of Charity Shops - FAQ's
Traditionally, charity shops used to occupy unlet or unpopular shops but the majority are now not only permanent, but are often in prime trading locations in high streets and market towns.
Charity shops benefit from tax concessions under UK tax law because all the profits from a charity shop go to fund the work of the charity, which is perceived as being of public benefit.
At most charity shops you simply have to bring your donation to the shop, but you should call first and check before bringing in any large item such as furniture (to make sure they have space) or electrical appliances (to make sure that the shop has a qualified technician to test the goods).

The great charity shop con | the Daily Mail
Many charity shops sell in bulk to businesses which are paying in weight, not quality (I weep at the thought of all that vintage going to waste).
In charity shops there should be a constant sale rail for people who cannot afford the high prices - £40 for a jacket, even if it is a label, is still too much, as was the rail of raggy T-shirts, all priced at £12, I saw last week.
If all charity shops cut their prices, the chazzers would be back and the stock would fly off the shelves, not out of the back door to the middle men.

Halfbakery: “take me to the charity shop” bags
now, I know that some charities already leave *their* bags for you with a date on it for collection but these always seem to come at the wrong time or the destination of one’s valuable donations is highly questionable (“we buy rubbish and sell antiques” kind of operation).
if someone wants to poke around in the charity bag then goodness knows they must be desperate and let them live with their conscience and if someone genuinely needs what they find in the bag then they are most welcome to it.
If people can't find the time to take stuff to the charity shop themselves, then they almost certainly aren't going to fully consider whether or not their donation is helpful.
