Accessibility charlatans | 456 Berea Street
It is very difficult to tell charlatans and evangelists apart, especially for decision makers and people not involved in accessibility on a daily basis as most of us here.
There are a lot of companies who got sold the lie that accessibility is a product that you bolt on to your system, rather than a part of design, like making a safe spacecraft (only it isn't rocket science so much as sensible design principles, common sense, and basic research.
Did it never occur to you that you may also be considered somewhat a charlatan.

For many years, the Charlatans UK were perceived as the also-rans of Madchester, the group that didn't capture the zeitgeist like the Stone Roses or the band that failed to match the mad genre-bending of the Happy Mondays.
The Charlatans decided to continue as a quartet, and their subsequent album, Tellin' Stories, debuted at number one upon its 1997 release, suggesting that they had become one of the great British journeyman bands of the '90s.

The Charlatans were, by dint of timing, effort and wardrobe, the first on the scene of the 60s San Francisco psychedelic rock bands.
In the summer of 1965, The Charlatans were recruited by Chandler Laughlin to audition as the house band for the newly-opened Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada.
The Charlatans' groundbreaking summer engagement at the Red Dog inspired musicians and promoters from San Francisco to begin what was to become a "golden era" of psychedelic music at the various SF dancehalls.

The sentiment fits, for the Charlatans have taken the wisdom of experience to make Wonderland-the seventh album of their twelve-year career-a platter piled high with the good stuff.
The Charlatans experienced so much so soon-their 1990 debut album Some Friendly topped the UK charts on the crest of their anthem "The Only One I Know"-that conventional guesswork predicted the band would be out of the game by the time the heady rush of the dance-rock Madchester movement subsided.
In the hefty tome of Charlatans hardships, the harshest chapter was the death of founding member and keyboardist Rob Collins partway through the recording of 1997's Tellin' Stories.

The Charlatans: "Tellin' Stories" ---Ink Blot Magazine
The album barely preserved The Charlatans hold in the British indie consciousness, featuring a few excellent singles but a general sense of directionlessness.
Fourth LP The Charlatans (1995) changed all that, embracing Stonesy rock and a dance groove and taking them back to the top of the charts.
Their rock and roll behavior was the stuff of (often tragic) legend, but their four albums were merely good if not as wildly exceptional as those other bands.

The Charlatans - Simpatico : album review
The Charlatans have been through more dramas than the average soap opera over their 20 years, whether it be death, cancer, nervous breakdowns, jail sentences, yet have stayed one of the most consistent bands in the country.
One secret to their success is the fact that their music is constantly evolving and surprising, whether it be the Curtis Mayfield referencing soul of Wonderland, the 'baggy' sound of their earlier material or the rustic pastoral pop of their last album Up At The Lake.
Single and album opener Blackened Blue Eyes is one of those moments, a bluesey piano driven track that builds in intensity, which is quickly followed by the thrilling NYC (There's No Need To Sleep) which successfully captures the excitement of that city, despite some rather clichéd lyrics.

The Charlatans: Us & Us Only ---Ink Blot Magazine
The Charlatans' bio has always threatened to overshadow their music.
The album is lean at 10 tracks, and has none of the (admittedly enjoyable) instrumental makeweights that peppered all the band's previous records (although a miniature Rhodes groove is tacked on to the last track).
That it may be the best work of their career, continuing their remarkable development into one of the finest bands of their generation, is some statement indeed.

The band's last three albums, Some Friendly, The Charlatans, and Telling' Stories all reached the #1 spot, and if the past truly is prologue, then their newest album, Us and Us Only, will likely make them the only British rock band to have scored four U.K. chart-toppers in the 90's...
Part of the Charlatans' charm has always been that they know their niche, know that they sell well, and never really alter their tried and tested blueprint too much.

With anticipation I eagerly awaited this sophomore release from the Charlatans hoping they would prove to be unique and set themselves apart from all the other British bands who emerged in the early 1990s.
Between 10th and 11th was the second album by the Charlatans and is usually the "forgotten" one, as it has no instantly recognizable singles on it, is not included in discussions of their best, and was slagged so badly by the brutal (and usually WRONG) UK music press that it's been largely overlooked and forgotten.
When The Charlatans first released this album I rushed to buy it, thinking it would be a natural continuation of their excellent debut, "Some Friendly".

This version of the Charlatans' signature tune, "Alabama Bound" (based on an old folk song) was recorded later, for an LP that never appeared except as a French import.
The Charlatans musical style could be described as early wild-west-Victorian-hippie rock, and was appreciated and even partially copied by many S.F. bands that came later, including the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Country Joe and the Fish.

At March's SXSW festival, the Charlatans UK (as they've been known in the U.S. for more than a decade) were as ubiquitous as baked beans and tongue-staining energy drinks.
