The greater Charleroi region is served by bus lines and a light rail Metro system (Métro Léger de Charleroi).
The high costs of construction, together with a decline in Charleroi's traditional "smokestack" industries, and questioning of the scope of the whole project in proportion to the actual demand for it, are all cited as reasons for the original plan going unfulfilled.

Charleroi is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, along the Monongahela River, 40 miles (64 km) south of Pittsburgh.
Charleroi was settled in 1890 and incorporated in 1891.
The decrease in the population is associated with the decline of the steel-making industry in the "Mon valley" which extends from Charleroi to the mouth of the Monongahela at Pittsburgh.

The airline operates eight Charleroi- London flights daily; the cut means a 10% drop in flights from Charleroi.
The airline said it was the first element of its response to the European Commission's recent decision to "increase costs at Charleroi and require that Ryanair's passengers should pay higher fares".
