  John Arbuthnot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arbuthnot was born in Kincardineshire, on the northeastern coast of Scotland, son of Rev Alexander Arbuthnot, an Episcopalian minister and Margaret, née Lammie.
In 1723, Arbuthnot was made one of the censors of the Royal College of Physicians, and as such he was one of the campaigners to inspect and improve the drugs sold by apothecaries in London.
Arbuthnot is one of the founding members of the Scriblerus Club, and he was regarded by the other wits of the club as the funniest, but Arbuthnot left fewer literary remains than the other members of the club.

Charles Arbuthnot (1767-1850) was a British Tory politician.
Charles Arbuthnot married second at Fulbeck, 31 January 1814, Harriet Fane (born 10 September 1793; died 2 August 1834; buried Fulbeck), one of 14 children, daughter of General the Hon Henry Fane of Fulbeck, Lincolnshire (younger brother of John, 9th Earl of Westmorland).
The Duke of Wellington was much attached to Mr and Mrs Arbuthnot and Charles, during the latter years of his life, lived in the Duke's house as his confidential friend; their story is told in "Wellington and the Arbuthnots", E A Smith 1994.

It was Alexander, son of Charles Junior and great-grandson of John of Balleny, who went to the United States in 1835 and founded the Pittsburgh branch of the family.
Charles married Elizabeth Shaw, one of their sons, William Shaw Arbuthnot became president of the store, and another, Dr Thomas Shaw, became Dean of the University of Pittsburgh from 1907-1918.
Eleanor, born an Arbuthnot of Balleny, married her cousin, another Charles Arbuthnot, possibly one of the Arbuthnots of Greenan.

Gottlieb (or Godlick or Godlieb) M. Van Someren, who died in 1853 in Madras was supposedly a friend of the Arbuthnots of Arbuthnot and Co. He married twice, in 1810 to Lydia Pascal and then after her death in the 1830s to Martha Avenal.
His son, William Judson Van Someren was recommended by one of the Mr Arbuthnots to the Indian Medical Service after qualifying as a surgeon in the mid 1840's in Edinburgh.

In 1896 the Hermione commanded by Captain Charles R Arbuthnot, was one of a squadron of six ships which was specially commissioned in reply to a congratulatory telegram from the German Emperor President Paul Kruger on the repulse of Dr Jameson's raid.
She was built at Devonport Dockyard and engined by Messrs J and G Thomson.
Hermione hoisted the pennant in the Special Flying Squadron and was commanded by Captain Charles R Arbuthnot.
