Colonel Charles A. Beckwith (22 Jan 1929–13 June 1994), was a career U.S. Army soldier and Vietnam veteran, credited with the creation of Delta Force, a branch of the U.S. Army.
Beckwith served as an exchange officer with the British SAS in the early 1960s, and came away very impressed with that unit.
Nicknamed "Chargin' Charlie", Colonel Beckwith was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Beckwith was one of the favorite officers of Sir John Moore in the famous camp of Shorncliffe, and aided that general in the training of the troops which afterwards became the Light Division.
Beckwith took part in the great march of Craufurd to the field of Talavera, in the advanced guard fights on the Coa in 1810 and in the campaign in Portugal.
Their nephew, Major-General JOHN CHARLES BEcKWITH (1789-1862), joined the 50th regiment in 1803, exchanging in 1804 into the 95th Rifles, with which regiment he served in the Peninsular campaigns of 180810.

Charles Alvin Beckwith was born Jan. 22, 1929, in southwest Atlanta, one of three children of an independent oil dealer.
Beckwith later learned he had faced regular North Vietnamese troops and told the press: "Give me a battalion of them and I'll take over the whole darned country." The remark was taken as a slap at the Americans' South Vietnamese allies, and after that Beckwith avoided the press.
Beckwith's unit scaled a significant hurdle in 1977, receiving the endorsement of Gen. Frederick "Fritz" Kroesen, then commander of FORSCOM at Fort McPherson and in charge of all ground troops in the continental United States.
