Chuck Bednarik - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Charles Philip Bednarik (born May 1, 1925 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) is a former professional football player, best remembered as one of the most devastating tacklers in football and the last two-way player in the National Football League.
Bednarik was the first player drafted in the 1949 National Football League draft, chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Bednarik's former Eagles number (60) has been retired by the Eagles in honor of Bednarik's achievements with the team and is one of only seven numbers retired in the history of the Eagles franchise.

Bednarik: To pick up on something you said earlier, about writing for your peers: Odysseus Elytis said that ideally the poet wants three readers, and since every poet had two good friends, his whole task is to try and find that third reader.
Bednarik: In your introduction to your collected poems, The Shape of the Journey, you said that if you laid out all your poetry books and just glanced over them, you got a sense of what table you would write at, what wine you were obsessed with.
Bednarik: There’s a number of poems throughout The Shape of the Journey where the first few lines begin “I was commanded in a dream” or “I was commissioned in a dream” to do something, to write something.

Fourteen of Bednarik's gridiron years came as a member of the Eagles and it was in Philadelphia that he became known as pro football's "Iron Man," a distinction that, along with his exceptional athletic skills, earned a berth in Pro Football's Hall of Fame just five years after his retirement in 1962.
Bednarik was in action 394 1/2 minutes in a 12-game season that year and then he capped it all off with a sterling 58-minute performance in the championship against Green Bay.
Bednarik met Taylor at the nine-yard line, and in the words of sportswriter Bill Lyon, wrestled him to the cold, hard ground like a rodeo cowboy bulldogs a steer and then sat on the squirming, seething Taylor until the clock blinked down to all zeroes..

Member - Pro Football Hall of Fame
No National Football League player in the 1950s was immune to bone-jarring contact with the Philadelphia Eagles' Chuck Bednarik because the 233-pounder played on both the offensive and defensive units long after the two-way player had largely faded from the scene.
Bednarik didn’t really get into football until he returned from World War II (after a 30-mission tour as a B-24 waist gunner with the Army Air Corps that saw him win the Air Medal).
Although he frequently played both offense and defense right up through the 1956 season, it was as a bone-jarring linebacker that he drew the most attention.

Bednarik, a distant cousin of NFL Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik, comes from tough-guy stock and has always been able to deal with a lot of pain.
Bednarik also believes that by paying attention during practices and during games, and getting a certain amount of game prep as the team’s No. 3 quarterback, he should be able to overcome not getting the physical reps he needs this spring.
Because of the type of injury he sustained, Bednarik knows he must be patient and not rush along the process and run the risk of re-injuring himself.

Irene Portis-Winner, a distinguished semiotic anthropologist, is the author of a double self-profile in which she retraces the intellectual quest that led her and her husband, Thomas G. Winner (1920-2004), to semiotics.
In this connection, an important contribution is represented by Charles Morris who explicitly theorized the necesssary relation between signs and values in his book of 1964, Signification and Significance.
By contrast with a view of semiotics as a solely cognitive, descriptive and ideologically neutral science, a major trend in semiotics today aims to recover the orientation toward problems of an axiological order and to achieve, therefore, a global reconnaissance of man and his signs.
