Bowen Island was called Isla de Apodaca by Quadra but the name was changed a week later by George Vancouver who named it for Rear Admiral James Bowen who fought in The Glorious First of June naval battle.
Bowen remained a wilderness until the 1870s when homesteaders built houses and started a brickworks, which supplied bricks to the expanding city of Vancouver.
Over the years, Bowen industry has included an explosives factory, logging, mining, and milling, although there is no heavy industry on the island at present.

Bowen, Charles Synge Christopher, Baron Bowen of Colwood (1835-94) Balliol 1854, Fellow of Balliol 1857-62 (the last undergraduate to be made a Fellow), Judge 1879, Lord of Appeal in Ordinary 1893 and Visitor of Balliol 1885-94.
Despite delicate health, Bowen was one of the best respected judges of his day, noted for the depth of his knowledge and the elegance of his language.
BJ and Bowen first became friendly when Bowen was an undergraduate, and Bowen became one of BJ's closest friends in the judiciary (his appointment as Visitor in 1885 shows this).

Several web pages have bits stating that Charles Bowen, a British judge, used it in an 1903 legal opinion: "Man on the Clapham omnibus, the - the man in the street This typically ordinary person on the bus was invented by a law lord, Lord Bowen, in 1903.
Another states: "He [Charles Bowen] is credited with quoting, and thus bringing to prominence, the phrase "the man on the Clapham omnibus" in the case of McQuire v.
What actually apparently happened is the writer of the opinion quoted Judge Bowen as having used that phrase but apparently not in any published writing (at least I think this is what happened short of seeing the actual opinion).

Damaged by fire at Southampton on 25/7/1921, she was rebuilt to 30,696 tons, converted from coal to oil fuel, and refitted to carry 589-1st, 400-2nd and 767-3rd class passengers.
In October 1927 she was converted to 1st, tourist and 3rd class accommodation and on 13/8/1930 commenced the last of 151 North Atlantic round voyages when she left Antwerp for Southampton, Quebec and Montreal.
In 1909, she was again rebuilt to 6,578 tons and on 1st Oct.1918 was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U.55, 170 miles from Bishops Rock, Scilly Islands, with the loss of 5 lives.
