The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries, most of them baroque-style, erected around 1700.
To sustain the bridge, tolls were taken, first by the religious order of the Knights of the Cross, that had their mother-house nearby, then by the Old Town municipality (until 1815).
The floods intensified the voices of the supporters of an overall bridge reconstruction and, as of 2005, the current repair of the pillars is considered as the first phase of the reconstruction, which will concentrate especially on building a new hydroisolation system protecting the bridge.

Under the terms of the Warren bridge charter, it was to be a toll bridge until it was paid for, but for no longer than six years, at which point the title to the bridge would be deeded to the commonwealth.
The Charles River Bridge was argued by Daniel Webster (the Senator from Massachusetts), Warren Dutton and Lemuel Shaw (soon to become the Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court), and the Warren Bridge was represented by Simon Greenleaf, a good friend of Justice Joseph Story, and John Davis.
If the new bridge were deemed necessary, by the legislature, to promote the general convenience, and the defendants were consequently authorized to construct it, and a part of the plaintiffs’ franchise were granted to the defendants; it was an appropriation of private property for public use.

In 1639, the town dug a canal from the Charles to a nearby brook that drained to the Neponset River.
Its design was the work of noted landscape architects Charles Eliot and Arthur Shurcliff, both of whom had apprenticed with Frederick Law Olmsted, and by the architect and landscape architect Guy Lowell.
In the 1950s a highway (Storrow Drive) was built along the edge of the Esplanade to connect Charles Circle with Soldiers Field Road, and the Esplanade was enlarged on the water side of the new highway.
